Ceramic balls are manufactured by pressing a ceramic powder binder mixture in a preform shape. After the ball is sintered, the part lines are removed via finish-grinding. Lapping and precision finishing is then used to design or grade dimensions and product specifications such as diameter, sphericity, and surface finish. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) may be used after sintering for applications that require a fully-dense material with specific material properties. HIP produces ceramic balls with pore-free microstructure and micron-sized grains.
Market Trends, Drivers, Restraints, and Opportunities:
- Increasing use of ceramic balls in the chemical and automotive industries due to their superior properties as compared to steel balls is projected to fuel the growth of the market.
- The demand for ceramic balls is anticipated to grow in the medical industry for manufacturing of diagnostic, laboratory equipment, and surgical & dental tools owing to their various properties. Expansion of the medical industry is projected to drive market growth.
- Requirement for high manufacturing and initial costs is a major factor challenging the growth of the market.
- Steel balls are noisier, heavier, and offer lower chemical resistance as compared to ceramic balls; therefore, end-users are increasingly using ceramic balls for various applications.
