Breathing involves inhalation and exhalation of air under repetitive cycles. In this process gas exchange occurs at regular intervals and to determine whether gas exchange is enough, ventilation can be referred though. Therefore, ventilation can be understood in terms of volume of gas entry or exit in the lungs for a given amount of time. In other words, the level of ventilation can be gauged by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide generated by the body and the amount of blood which is inversely proportional to the level of ventilation. Thus, mechanical ventilation comes into picture wherein the respiratory muscles become incapable of ventilation and the air pressure within the lungs need to be manually manipulated to strengthen breathing movements by the help of a mechanical ventilator.

While using a mechanical ventilator, positive or negative pressure techniques, either of these are used. Positive pressure ventilators pertain to the airway opening devices (atmospheric pressure) whereas negative pressure ventilators relate to the pressure applied at the body surface (abdomen or rib cage). If using a positive air pressure to enhance the normal lung volume, the pressure at end expiration is called as PEEP. However, there are few potential shortcomings with the application of this approach hence, a continuous positive airway pressure called as CPAP was developed wherein optimum results are achieved.
