VPNs come to the rescue—a simple solution to a not-so-simple problem.

Good day!

I believe each of us has faced resource unavailability in our region at some point. Whether it's a page with important information or a fanfiction website, who do these resources really harm?

That question remains unanswered. Fortunately, VPNs come to the rescue—a simple solution to a not-so-simple problem.

How does a VPN work?

In short, your computer connects to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) over the internet, masking your real IP address.

Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a VPN:

1️⃣ Nothing is truly free

If a VPN is free, it usually means your data is being sold, your time is being wasted, or both.

2️⃣ DNS Protection

Even if you're using a VPN, websites can detect your real location through DNS requests. A good VPN should offer DNS Leak Protection to prevent data leaks.

How to check for leaks?
Go to dnsleaktest.com and run a test. If you see your real location—your VPN is leaking data.

3️⃣ Kill Switch

If your VPN suddenly disconnects, your real IP address becomes visible. The Kill Switch feature automatically blocks your internet connection if the VPN drops.

How to enable it?
Most VPN apps have this option under "Security Settings".
For example, in NordVPN and ExpressVPN, Kill Switch is enabled by default.

4️⃣ Check the VPN’s website for transparency

Look at the available server locations. They won't list exact addresses, but you can at least see which countries they operate in.

5️⃣ Test before committing

Use the free trial to check:
✔️ Speed
✔️ Ease of use
✔️ Number of available servers

Once you’ve made your choice, decide what matters more to you: security or speed. This will determine which protocol suits you best.

Main VPN Protocols:

  • WireGuard – Best balance of speed and security.
  • OpenVPN – Reliable and time-tested, but can be slower, especially on mobile devices.
  • IKEv2/IPSec – Fast and particularly good for mobile networks.
  • L2TP/IPSec & PPTP – Outdated and not very secure—better to avoid.

These are the essential tips—stay alert, stay secure, and may your connection never drop! 🔥
