What is the rektguy NFT collection?
- The rektguy collection is a set of drinking skeletons in neon blinking colors
- The team behind the project have not proposed a roadmap or offshoot projects
- Artist OSF already has an established fan base in the NFT ecosystem
The rektguy NFT collection consists of 8,814 NFTs displaying skeletons wearing a hoodie and drinking from a bottle. The figures consist of blinking neon colors on a deep black background, highlighting the dark, nocturnal aura of the designs.
About rektguy
The project launched in May 2022, as ERC-721 tokens on the Ethereum network. The maximum amount of tokens was set at 11,000, but during the mint process, which lasted from May 21 to May 27, only 8,814 were minted.
The art represents a person who got rekt, a misspelling of wrecked that is popular in the crypto slang. Rekt usually refers to being negatively affected by price crashes, something that has been happening in the crypto markets for the last few months.
The collection has been successful on the market since its launch. Only a few days after its minting process took place, big names in the industry, like Cozomo de Medici and rapper Snoop Dogg bought rektguy NFTs, which attracted a lot of attention to the project.
On May 29th, after the mint process ended, OSF said on Twitter that he doodled rektguy 6 months before while he was bored at his day job.
The rektguy collection doesn’t have a roadmap or any ideas for an extended ecosystem, beyond the ownership of the tokens. OSF, the artist behind rektguy, stated in his Twitter account that they decided to create the project like this to emphasize the artistic and cultural values of the collection.
“Thus, expectations are not really contingent on a certain creator or team carrying out a roadmap […] So, with these NFTs, we are not worrying about a new CEO or what valuation they raised at or when the token drop is coming in order to distinguish value, we just know they are going to appreciate over time as fine collectibles, because they are primarily about ART and CULTURE.”
Following this idea, the official website only showcases the tokens, rather than any related info. In rektguy.com we see the flyer for a private party that took place in London on November 3rd, and many attendees posted on Twitter that “What happens at #therektshow stays at #therektshow”. Similarly, the OSF website only displays a carousel of rektguys.
On November 4th, the team announced on the rektguy Twitter account that token owners could now register their Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domains, one per rektguy. Once the domain is chosen and linked to a token, it cannot be modified.
Who is behind rektguy?
The rektguy collection was initially outlined by British artist and investor Ovie Faruq, also known as OSF, along with artist Alien Queen. Mike Anderson (also known as Mando) is also a part of the project, and he has been a partner of Faruq in several previous collections.
For example, the two worked together on Degenz, another successful NFT project, and they’re part of Canary Labs, the company that developed these two NFT projects.
The rektguy collection features slang and elements used widely in the crypto space, like the Pepe meme, Wojak, or the acronyms “gm” (for good morning), and “wagmi” (for we are gonna make it).
Market performance
The floor price for the rektguy collection is currently 0.42 ETH. The cheapest token is rektguy #5010, with a rarity rank of 8033. The highest last sale was rektguy #6113, with a rarity rank of 7, and was traded for 20 ETH on May 29th.
