Кондайк, Юкон, Доусон, Чилкут – в моем юном сознании, поглощавшем рассказы Джека Лондона,
эти названия звучали музыкой приключений и удачи.
Удача в Клонайской золотой лихорадке (1897 – 1900 гг.) улыбнулась не каждому.
Около 1 миллиона человек вознамерились отправиться за золотом в Клондайк;
около 100 тысяч действительно за ним пошли;
около 60 тысяч человек погибли по дороге, либо вернулись назад;
около 40 тысяч человек дошло до Доусона;
только 4 тысячи из них действительно нашли золото.
Реально, ничем не рискуя, обогатились владельцы салунов, лавочек и фабриканты, успевшие быстро наладить производство инструментов и приборов для поиска и добычи золота.
В салунах, за выпивку, а в лавочках за провиант и инструменты, владельцы предпочитали принимать в оплату золотой песок.
Наряду с неизменными лопатой, киркой и промывочным лотком, золотоискатели, не доверяя пройдохам-лавочникам, предпочитали иметь свои весы для взвешивания золота.
Несколько фирм быстро наладили изготовление и продажу весов для старателей.

Miners Improved Pocket Gold Scale Closed with Weights | MINERS IMPROVED POCKET GOLD SCALE - Tin cased miners gold scale, orange red exterior and interior color, marked MINERS JMPROVED GOLD SCALE. in dark gold letters across top front and in dark gold letters “manufactured expressely for California.” across bottom front with GERMANY below it with a classic spread-wing gold American eagle in the center clutching an olive branch and three arrows in its talons and bearing a shield across its breast, 7 1/4 in. wide x 3 1/2 in. deep x 1 1/2 in. high in oval shape, brass beam, pans and chains with 5 troy ounce weights [1/2 (2), 1 (2), 2]; 7 pennyweights marked DWTS [1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]; and 3 grain weights [2, 3, 4] Note: 1 troy ounce = 20 pennyweight; 1 pennyweight = 24 grains (The California Gold Rush produced a number of “California Goods” to identify and to be identified with this great adventure; boots, knives, brandy, and gold amalgamators filled the bill to name a few along with the miners pocket gold scales shown here; these pocket scales date from the 1850s and perhaps into the 1860s and came in a variety of bright colors including light and dark green, royal blue, dark yellow, ocher brown, red, and maroon among others and in both oval and rectangular shapes in sizes from up to 7 1/4 in. long by up to 3 1/2 in. wide and 1 1/2 in. deep; the more common exterior colors were red, brown and dark green while dark blue, yellow and black are rarer; most were marked Miners Improved Gold Scale as the model shown here; little is known about the makers, although this scale was clearly manufactured in Germany as marked; all have brass beams, pans and suspension chains although some have iron pointers; troy weights were typically included. It should be noted that an earlier pocket scale marked Miners Gold Scale without the Improved is found. The oval shaped scales came in two sizes, the longer version as shown here and a shorter version shown elsewhere in my pics. The longer version seems to be much less common than the short version. It’s also interesting to note that the earlier markings replaced the I of Improved with a J as shown here as a result of the German to English spelling inconsistency and an extra e was found in the spelling of expressly. see Millet, Mining Artifact Collector #8, pp 25-27)

Собственно говоря, по конструкции это были известные еще со времен Вавилона равноплечие весы, на которых можно было взвешивать любой товар (чай, табак, кофе и т.д.),
элементом, определяющим, что это весы именно для взвешивания золота были гири.
В те достославные времена, как и в настоящее время, массу золота принято определять в тройских унциях.

Antique Seattle Marked Gold Scale - Alaska Gold RushUnusual marked antique portable gold miners scale. Has paper label inside lid of tin box from Jos. Mayer & Bros, Seattle, Wash. Reads "U.S. Standard Pocket Gold Scales, 4 oz. troy weight. It is likely that these scales were marketed for the Alaska Gold Rush at the end of the 1890's, as Seattle was a stopping point on the way to Alaska.Tin box measures about 7 inches by 4 inches. Arm of scale measures 7 inches long. Pans are slightly less than 3 ½ inches in diameter. Comes with many gold troy ounce weights and grain weights as shown and as found. There was also a note in the box regarding weight conversions, and the weight of a stickpin, ring, and necklace. This will be included as well.Box looks like it was coated with shellac a long time ago. Tin box has some rust, dents, and separation at the corners of the lid, but solid overall. Label has soiled and darkened with some slight loss, although layer of shellac has protected it.This is an interesting portable miner's gold scale that was likely marketed for the Alaska Gold Rush. During the American Gold Rush shopkeepers kept scales with a set of graduated weights for gold dust customers used to pay for their wares. The balance scales were among the first scales ever invented. They were derived from the principle of the yoke, where two equal masses balance each other if suspended at equal length from a central beam. The object to be measured is placed on one side of a pivoting lever, and weights of known mass are placed on the other to balance. Gold is a heavy metal, and therefore traders would usually weigh it on a balance scale to ensure it was not fake.
