How To Take Care Of Dogs During The Rainy Season
It has been raining for quite some days and your poor furball has not been able to get out ever since. It desperately wants to get out however the rain doesn’t stop and it’s creating tantrums now. Or, your dog got wet in the rain and is now sick? Or the dog gets dirty every time in a puddle of mud? Pets are most responsive to water-borne infections like foot dermatitis (inflammation of the skin on the feet), and ear infections during monsoon. A good rainy season after the intense summer heat is a welcome change not only for us but also for our furry friends. But this is also a time when we need to pay special attention to pet hygiene. Most of these conditions are caused or exacerbated by contaminated water and high humidity. Coats and mites that smell of moisture are also common during this time. Here are monsoon care tips for dogs to keep your pet in good health during the rainy season.
- Keep them dry. Especially their coat and paws. During the monsoon, your dog companions are exposed to moisture, making them prone to foot dermatitis. Moisture in parks and wet streets weakens follicles and causes irritation of the skin on the feet. Do not leave your dog's feet wet for extended periods of time. Clean it clean with blotter paper. Rinse with clean water each time you walk and dry your feet if possible. If you have a pet with a long coat, keep the fur between the pads on your feet. This keeps the stubborn mud that may cling to their feet. Also, be careful not to get your nails too close to your skin to prevent bleeding and infection. Each time it gets wet, it should be wiped dry to avoid a damp coat and the associated odor. Polish your pet religiously at least twice a day. You can also use dog powder or deodorant, which is readily available at pet stores, to reduce the odor of your pet.
- Keep them away from dirty stagnant water. Like you, polluted stagnant water can prey on your pet for water-borne diseases. Common symptoms of bowel problems are vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. Make sure they are drinking clean water.
- Clean their ears regularly (like once a day). Because of the rain, you are more likely to get an ear infection. During the monsoon, you need to clean your ears with a cotton swab every day. At other times, you can clean it once a month.
- It is the ticks season, so don’t forget to save your dog from ticks. The monsoon is the breeding season for mites. Therefore, mites and fleas are more likely to infect your pet. To prevent this, use a tick collar and ask your vet about oral medications. However, avoid self-medication to pets. Always consult an expert. If your pet is already infected with ticks, take a tick-proof shampoo and rub the tick-proof ointment. However, this may not be enough. You may need to physically remove mites from your pet's fur. While doing this, make sure you kill the insects by immersing them in a glass of kerosene or water (plain or mixed with detergent).
