A star that is forever swallowed by a black hole

Astronomers from the University of Leicester have described a unique astronomical event: a star 500 light-years away is regularly torn apart and swallowed by a black hole

But it "recovers" at regular intervals.

Such a dramatic event causes incredible flashes of light every 25 days, which has been observed by scientists. Usually, such flares lead to the destruction of large gas objects or their absorption. But in this case, the alternating flashes of light indicate partial destruction, and this happens again and again.

"In most cases we have seen before, the star is completely destroyed. Swift J0230 adds to the class of partially collapsed stars," says Dr Rob Ailes-Ferris.

In such a situation, the regularity of the outbursts appears between two extremes, the team notes. Observations have shown that instead of the expected fading, Swift J0230 shines brightly for 7-10 days and then suddenly goes out, repeating the cycle every 25 days.

The researchers claim that their work, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, provides a "missing link" in understanding how black holes destroy orbiting stars.
