Let’s be wise about our wisdom tooth

The most “defamed” molars are wisdom teeth that often cause patients a lot of pain. Either inside the bone or completely erupted, 9 out of 10 individuals have wisdom teeth present. In quadrant, we, humans, are destined to have three molars. In these, “Wisdom teeth” are referred to as the last molar. At 18-25 years of age, these teeth are the only permanent teeth to erupt in the oral cavity. So we’ll mature by that point. Therefore the name. Let’s try and understand what is so notorious about them.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Throughout life, the mouth (or oral cavity) undergoes several changes. The emergence of your third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, is a significant dental milestone between the ages of 17 and 25. These teeth are so named that at a more mature age they erupt.

They can help your teeth chew as long as they erupt in a good alignment and proper position. Generally, it is common to alleviate a little pain during the wisdom teeth eruption process, But if you have inflammation and swelling, see a dentist immediately.

Problems caused due to wisdom teeth

In prehistoric people, since the scale of the dental arches or the jawbones were wider, the wisdom teeth had enough space to erupt. Today, the sizes of the jawbones have reduced as a result of evolutionary changes, resulting in inadequate space in many people for the eruption of wisdom teeth.

If there is not enough room for them to emerge, wisdom teeth that are stuck in the jaw or under the gums are said to be affected.

This can contribute to certain dental issues, such as—

  • Food trapping contributes to cavity-causing bacterial growth
  • Wisdom teeth that can give bacteria a place to invade the gums and establish a place for the occurrence of inflammation that contributes to discomfort, swelling and stiffness in the jaw.
  • On or above the impacted tooth, a wisdom tooth that is impacted may develop a cyst. The roots of surrounding teeth could be affected or the bone protecting your teeth could be broken.
  • And fully erupted wisdom teeth may be lost, sometimes causing cheek pain, gums and trouble chewing and swallowing.

Reasons for extraction (removal) of wisdom teeth-

  • It is safer to eliminate symptoms such as pain, infection, decay or extreme malposition, if they are present.
  • To prevent the possibility of infection and decay in the long run, the removal of a semi-erupted (incomplete) wisdom molar is almost always recommended.
  • In order to avoid damages to the adjacent 2nd molar (resorption)

Reasons for retaining a wisdom molar-

  • There is no need to remove if the tooth is well-positioned, fully erupted, and has an antagonist (opposing tooth in the opposing arch).
  • It can be preserved if the gum flap protecting the tooth has been removed and the tooth can be maintained by daily brushing.

Prevention of wisdom tooth problems

The issues related to wisdom teeth can be reduced by using a panoramic radiograph (OPG x-ray) to determine their eruption and evaluate factors such as the size of the teeth, the formation of their roots, the location of the eruption, the space available, the jaw bone, etc.

Conclusion-

In certain individuals, wisdom teeth, usually by bone or other teeth, are blocked from coming in. The teeth are tilted beneath the gum at times. These are considered as “impacted” teeth by dentists.
