Solar for Tamilnadu Households

Switching to solar? If you are a household in Tamilnadu then below are certain points to consider while deciding to switch solar.

  1. What is your Bimonthly power consumption at present
  2. Do you expect your consumption to increase (as a certainity it will increase)
  3. Are you planing to purchase electric vehicle in near future (India is poised to go in EV way)
  4. Do you have enough shadowfree roof space to install solar system

Bimonthly power consumption

If your consumption is exceeding 500 units per billing cycle then you should definitely consider switching to solar. The TNEB tariff rate increases considerably when the consumption increases beyond 500 units. So a rooftop solar system aimed at bringing your consumption from TNEB to less than 500 is the most logical way to bring your EB bill down

Do you expect your consumption to increase

It is not necessary to explain how we are dependant on electricity for our daily life and it is very obivious that our consumption is increasing. Tamilnadu is tropical and we are getting used to the comfor of the Air condtioner. With rising LPG cycliner prices, it makes sense to use Electricty for majority of cooking.

Are you planing to purchase electric vehicle in near future

Indian government have set target of going full EV by year 2030. This may sound ambitious but the tipping point for switchover to EV is very nearby. Already there are EV two wheelers which are making economic and practical sense in the minds of new vehicle purchasers. So on certainity there will be a EV vehicle in your house in near future. A household with EV will benefit immensely with Rooftop solar panel

Do you have enough shadowfree roof space to install solar system

With present day technology each KW needs 80 Sq feet of shadowfree space. Typically you can install 1KW on the top of your water tank in terrace. It keeps the water cool during summer . If you are living in apartment, elevated structure for solar panels will not eat away the terrace space and is available for other uses.

Netmeter concept

At present power flows in one direction. That is from TNEB to our Home. The meter installed measured the units we import from TNEB and based on that pay on Bimonthly basis.

But with Rooftop solar system installed , the unconsumed solar power is exported to the TNEB. To keep track of exported power Bi-directional meter is required. This is the so called netmeter. Each billing cycle we pay for the power we imported minus the power we exported. The netmeter keeps track of both imported and exported power.
