Homing keycaps DIY guide

To create custom homing keycaps you'll need:

  • Two keycaps
  • Paper clip
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Pliers
  • Masking tape or something heavy

Bend the paper clip

Use pliers to bend one end of a paper clip into a triangle shape as shown on the photos. The bottom of the triangle will be the width of the homing bump on the key. The flatter you can get the bottom and the sharper the corners — the better results will be. The end of the clip needs to come up and almost touch the other side so the soldering iron heats it up evenly from both sides.

Prepare the workspace

Put the keycap face down, attach it to the table surface with tape or put something heavy on top. When you lift your jig from the keycap it may stick and you will have both hands occupied so it will be hard to remove the paper clip from the keycap without this step.

Set the iron to about 350 degrees. You may need to experiment with temperature depending on your iron and the tip you use. Use a wide tip so the heating is more efficient. Hold the paper clip with pliers, it will get quite hot. Grab some solder with the iron and put it on top of the paper clip triangle to connect its both sides and make sure the heat can transfer to the paper clip.

Heat it up

When the paper clip is heated, push it down into the keycap from the back of where you want the homing bump to be. Keep it as straight as possible, it always wants to move to the side a bit. Pull the paperclip out while still heating it with the iron (it cools almost instantly otherwise).

Done

Below are my results for Chosfox (CFX) Choc keycaps. White ones were slightly more difficult to handle compared to black, it seems like the material composition is a bit different (both are PBT though).

And here is a keyboard with them:
