Functions of Cylinder Liner
The cylinder sleeve receives combustion heat through the piston and piston rings. It transmits the heat to the coolant. The barrel or bore in which an engine piston moves back and forth may be an integral part or it may be a separate liner or sleeve.Â
The cylinder liner has high anti-galling properties. The less consumption of lubricants, less wear on the cylinder liners, and less wear on the partner piston ring are the main three necessary points. It prevents the compressed gas and combustion gas from escaping outside.
Types of cylinder liner
Dry cylinder liner: These are the basic piston protectors. They can withstand extremely high temperatures. They guard against impurities. They are made of high-grade materials such as cast iron and ceramic-nickel plating. The dry cylinder liner is thinner than wet liners. It doesn’t interact with the engine coolant, but it provides a very close fit with the jacket within the cylinder block to protect the piston from impurities and heat.
Wet cylinder liners: Wet cylinder liners are made up of cast iron and ceramic-nickel plating. They are available in direct contact with the engine coolant. Sometimes, this cylinder liner is fitted with tiny openings to help dispersal of impurities and heat. It is called a water jacket liner. It is also called wet cylinder liners.
Finned cylinder liner: It is also made up of heat and impurity-resistant metal. It is designed for the air-cooled engine. The working principle of finned cylinder liners is similar to dry cylinder liners. It is fitted with tiny fins, which allows the inflowing air to draw with heavy force around the cylinder to provide cooling.
