Is there milk in cookie dough?

A few years ago, a blogger named Karen posted a recipe for milk-free cookie dough, to try to improve on my favorite brand of dairy-free cookie dough (which is now too sweet) and my husband's favorite (that doesn't have any dairy at all, in the form of applesauce). It was a hit…people loved it!

I was really happy to hear this, and so much so, that I wanted to share my own milk-free cookie dough with you. Since I'm vegan — and very partial to homemade cookies — I knew if I did this with dairy, I would surely fail miserably.


But I did it! I'm happy to report that this delicious dairy-free cookie dough tastes just as good as it looks! I used almond milk in the baking and almond butter in the cookie dough (it adds some extra protein to the dough) but you could definitely use either in place of some milk.

The answer might seem obvious: the company behind the restaurant chain that gives employees free burgers in exchange for a few hours of their services — a service that allows the employees to work while they're getting drunk, which is something to which they are very well-adapted. The answer might be more obvious if the company didn't own a store that also gave away nearly $3 million to politicians in the 2012 election cycle, according to a Center for Public Integrity analysis of federal campaign finance records since 2000. And as we noted last month, Cracker Barrel was just one of the companies that funneled nearly $100,000 to House candidates who went on to vote against the workers' demands.

What is the difference between cookie dough and edible cookie dough?

In edible cookie dough, the yeast has been diluted so the final dough is more cake like and less moist. Some cookie dough recipe books tell you to add 1 - 2 cups of white sugar to your dough, but in reality the baking time will be the same (about 30-45 minutes); the sugar will just "soften" the batter into a more cake-like cookie dough and add sweetness to taste and not change anything about its texture. It is more like a biscuit than a cookie.

Dough for bread: There are many different kinds of dough to use for bread. A good general rule of thumb is to think of bread dough as a mix of whole wheat flour, yeast and water to begin with, and then add other flours at the end to alter the consistency as you go through the baking process.

When did people start eating cookie dough?

When cookies were invented in the late 1800s, this American treat was created by baking two short pieces of soft, chewy dough and then rolling them into a disc. The name "cookie" comes from this early stage of the recipe, as well as from the fact that cookie dough is a great place to store left-over baked goods in the U.S.

Why do you use butter?

Because it's where all the flavor of the dough comes from. In order to create an authentic crust, we first shape the dough and then add our melted butter to the mixture, creating the soft cookie dough exterior. To ensure the crust stays crisp and light, we have a special process we use with our butter that prevents it from getting too warm and crumbles when baked. Then we bake our baked goods until the edges brown and puff back up, creating the famous "Cookie Monster" effect.

Where did Cracker Barrel start?

The company, which was started in a Dallas garage by Bill Murray (played by Bob Balaban) and his wife Susan (Nancy Drew), initially aimed to serve "high-end specialty food served in a cool, modern setting" at a time when "there was no real market for specialty food." But as the company grew and diversified to include coffee, cocktails, and ice cream, an advertising-heavy mentality arose in its early years. Its early ads, for instance, used humor to convey what its products stood for: "If you've ever wanted to buy a brand-new car at the same time as you buy a brand-new burger, that's why."

And then, something remarkable happened to Cracker Barrel: Its sales started growing, too. As sales grew, its ads got less and less zany, which in turn caused Cracker Barrel's customers to stop buying it, resulting in a major sales slump.
