How to Clean Sofas at Home?

Thanks to these methods, the furniture will be as good as new.

Things to consider

  • Remove any dust from the sofas before cleaning them. To do this, go through the furniture with a vacuum cleaner with an open pipe or with a special nozzle. There is another option: moisten the sheet, put it on the sofas and knock it out with a carpet beater. The particles will settle on the sheet.
  • If this doesn't help, go to the methods described below: they will help you deal with stains. It is better to check any tool first on an inconspicuous area of furniture. So you will make sure that the upholstery will definitely be in order.
  • Hard fabrics can be rubbed with a brush, and for soft ones, leather and leatherette, use a sponge or a clean cloth.
  • After cleaning the furniture with the chosen product, allow the fabric to dry completely. Then it is advisable to vacuum the sofas again to remove the remaining particles of the product, dust or dirt from the surface.
  • If you don't trust self-cleaning or the contamination is too strong, contact a specialist. They will choose the appropriate method themselves.

1. How to clean sofas with a solution of soda, vinegar, glycerin and dishwashing liquid

The method is suitable for all types of upholstery, except leather and leatherette.

What do you need?

  • 1 litre of very warm water + for rinsing;
  • 4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid;
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda;
  • 2-4 tablespoons of glycerin;
  • 8 tablespoons vinegar 9%;
  • brush, sponge, or cloth.

How to do it

In water, dissolve the dish detergent and baking soda. Pour in the glycerin and mix thoroughly. Then add the vinegar and mix well again. A rich foam will appear on the surface of the solution.

Use a sponge, brush or cloth to rub the product into the sofas, paying special attention to dirty areas. It is better to do this in rubber gloves. Apply all the remaining foam to the surface. Leave it on for 1 hour.

After that, clean the sofas with a wet cloth or sponge. Wash it frequently under running water or in a basin.

Clean off the product and any dirt that has come to the surface until the water from the sponge or rag becomes clear.

2. How to clean the sofas with household soap or dishwashing liquid

This method is suitable for all types of upholstery.

What do you need?

  • Household soap or dishwashing liquid;
  • 1 litre of very warm water + for rinsing;
  • brush, sponge, or cloth.

How to do it

Lather the soap or liquid in water. The solution should be quite saturated.

Clean the sofas with it, carefully rubbing the foam, especially in dirty places.

Then replace the water with clean water. Rinse with a brush or sponge and wipe the furniture clean. Do this until the water is completely clear. Change it periodically and rinse it frequently with a brush or sponge.

3. How to clean sofas with a purchased cleaner

There are different products for different types of fabric, so please read the label before buying.

What do you need?

  • A special cleaner for furniture and carpets (for example, "Stikhonit", Unicum, "Big Wash", " 5+") or a cleaner for cleaning car interiors (Profoam cleaner is especially praised on forums);
  • water for flushing — optional;
  • brush, sponge, or cloth.

How to do it

Each product may have different uses, so follow the instructions on the package. Most often, the cleaner is applied immediately in the form of foam or diluted in water to a foam state.

Then it is usually distributed over the corner sofa, left for a while and cleaned with a dry or wet cloth.
