Joint Replacement Surgery: An Overview

What is a Joint Replacement surgery ?

Joint replacement surgery is a common orthopedic procedure used to treat the pain and disability caused by damaged arthritis joint. Joint replacements are usually very successful, with approximately 95% of people who have the procedure being satisfied with the outcome.

Joints in the body including hips, knees, shoulders and elbows are all susceptible to arthritis.

Types of Joint Replacement Surgery

  • Total Hip Replacement
  • Total Knee Replacement
  • Partial Knee Replacement
  • Shoulder Joint Replacement
  • Total Elbow Replacement
  • Wrist Joint Replacement

Total Hip Replacement

Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery has been in use for decades now. It is a surgical procedure that is performed to replace the ball and socket of the hip joint with prosthetic implants known as components.

The most common form of hip replacement surgery involves replacing both the upper thigh bone and lower leg bone with the implants.

Partial Knee Replacement

Partial knee replacement is a procedure that is used to replace parts of the knee like the acetabular rim, the total knee joint, or the surface of the knee joint.

These are often done as an alternative to total knee replacement surgery, particularly if one or two aspects of the knee are damaged rather than the entire joint.

Total Knee Replacement

Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces the painful and swollen knee joint with a prosthesis. In this procedure, the damaged surfaces of the knee are removed, and a plastic and metal device is implanted to form new smooth surfaces over which your thigh bone and shin bone rub during knee movement.

When to consider Joint Replacement Surgery

One should consider a Joint Replacement Surgery if they are living with the pain and discomfort of joint issues. One does not need to face such conditions for the remainder of their life.
