The Story Behind the FC Barcelona Logo

When it was first formed in 1899, FC Barcelona used a logo which was the symbol of the city of Barcelona. The logo is in the shape of a rhombus and is divided into four spaces with a crown on it.

On top of the crown is a bat and beside the rhombus is surrounded by a palm branch on the right and a laurel tree branch on the left. This logo is a form of identity that the club is from Barcelona. The logo lasted for 10 years to be exact until 1910.

In 1908, Barcelona experienced economic instability which put the club in a serious crisis. The club president at that time, Joan Gamper, took a number of policies, one of which was to change the club logo.

In 1910, the club held a competition for all its members to design a new logo. Interestingly, the competition was won by Carles Comamala who was none other than a Barcelona player from 1903 to 1912.

The Barcelona logo we see today is a logo designed by Carles Comamala in 1910. Of course, there have been a number of minor changes to suit the times.

Barcelona's first logo was in the shape of a bowl. In it, at the top left, is the cross of St. George, which was pinned as a form of appreciation for a crusader who had protected the city of Catalonia, namely St George.

Then, at the top right there is a red stripe on a gold background which is La Senyera, the Catalan flag. This placement is to emphasize that Barcelona belongs to the Catalans.

In the middle, there is a transverse line with the words FCB in it which are the initials of FC Barcelona. At the bottom there is a red and blue line which is the color of Barcelona's pride. Some say that this color is inspired by the jersey color of FC Basel, the club that was also founded by Joan Gamper. At the bottom there is also a soccer ball.

Changes in General Franco .'s Era

Until 1941 small changes did occur, although they did not change the historical meaning of the logo itself. The changes were made to add aesthetics to the logo of the proud Catalan team.

A striking change occurred in 1941 when General Franco came to power. One of its policies is to prohibit the raising of the Catalan flag and the use of the Catalan language. In addition, General Franco also required all Spanish citizens to use Spanish as the official language of the country.

This also had an impact on the change in the club's initials which from the beginning read FCB to CFB which stands for "Club de Futbol Barcelona" which is Spanish.

Not only the initials, the four red stripes on the top right, which are the symbol of the Catalonian flag, were removed and only two lines were left. Indirectly, the Catalan flag was missing from the Barcelona logo.
On Barcelona's 50th anniversary, or eight years later, two red stripes were again pinned which have survived to this day. The words "FCB" have been returned since 1974, or a year before Franco's death.

Current Barcelona Logo

Since 1975, no changes have been made to the Barcelona logo. Then, in 2002, the club appointed Claret Serrahima to make the logo simpler and more modern.

Changes are seen in the outline, namely there is one pointed end on the right, left, and bottom of the logo. The dot in the FCB text is also removed to become FCB.

In addition, the writing size was made smaller. In 1949 the color of the ball contained in the Barcelona logo was made red but in 2002 the color of the ball was given the same yellow color as when the logo was first created by Carles Comamala.

Whether there is an influence or not, but this logo change makes FC Barcelona's achievements rise significantly. The Blaugrana won eight La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey titles and four Champions League titles.
