18 Wildflowers

Yesterday afternoon a small friend of mine payed a visit and brought me a bunch of uprooted wildflowers, which later on I planted along the meditation path, where I have some others. These particular flowers are so obscure that even the locals don’t have a name for them, but they are very beautiful, a startlingly bright red bud showing on an otherwise undistinguished plant.

This morning I was walking in meditation when I noticed the flowers were getting bigger as the dawn proceeded to come in; the flowers, responding to the increasing light were emerging from their sheaths to display their full glory to the world, and especially to any interested insect who might be able to further their reproductive aim. I stopped and watched as the flower unfolded, a small wonder to brighten the day.

the clouds are my watch
as time floats by
relentless, beautiful,
the significant sky

wind moves the trees
each its own way
as the breath of air
cools the long day

blue heavens so vast
and myself so small
my thoughts overtake me
obscuring it all

Three black butterflies dance with great verve among the wildflowers exploring the garden, enjoying the play of life as they chase one after the other, alighting occasionally to drink the juice of a fallen jak fruit.
