Did you know that Scooby-Doo the gang, and their pals come from Ohio?
Since the time I was young, I have watched many Scooby-Doo cartoons, with different degrees of interest and frequency. However, if I had been asked where Scooby and his human counterparts were from in 1988 or earlier I could not have replied.
The cartoons that I enjoyed the most were Scooby-Doooo, Where Are You?, Scooby-Doo Show as well as New Scooby-Doo Movies. These shows aired between 1969-1984.
The impression I had was that the gang was always traveling--vacationing, visiting a friend or relative, and, on very rare occasions, actually looking for a mystery rather than stumbling into one.
(The one in which Scooby acts as the decoy in a dog-napping plot, which is what the Internet claims originate from the first season, and is titled "Decoy for a Dognapper" and stood out to me in my early mind as the one mystery the team didn't need to drive for a long distance to reach).

It's a low-cost version of the feature movies however, it's a Cartoon Network original. This film was also an update to the 2009 Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins! is the same film with the same cast.
So I'm half-watching it while drawing, taking note of the curious casting choices, like hair-darkened Robbie Amell as Fred and slim, lithe, Asian Hayley Kiyoko as Velma, and wondering to myself, how odd it is that this Daphne is so much larger and curlier than Velma, and this could be the first time in history that Velma is the more attractive among the two (I think Linda Cardellini is hotter than Sarah Michelle Gellar but that's certainly something that sensible people will disagree on; in fact after re-watching this, Kate Melton's quite hot too...I thought I was just struck by the fact that Velma is so much hotter and...different than the original character Velma).
Kiyoko's casting appears to have been yet another step towards the increasing popularity of Velma. The process started with Cardellini being cast as a film star and is continuing with the brand new character design of the Mystery Incorporated series.
The film begins with the closing day of Coolsville High School. The group of students climbs in the Mystery Machine and heads to Daphne's uncle's country club, where they have gotten summer jobs.
The filmmakers put a miniature Mystery Machine van on a map and track the progress of the vehicle as it travels between Coolsville to Erie Pointe.
Imagine my excitement at seeing Coolsville's names on the map"Wadsworth Medina Oberlin and then realized that Coolsville is actually in Ohio!
It's on Route 18 in Lorain County. Perhaps Medina County. It is located to the south of Wellington (Oberlin), Elyria (Oberlin), Medina (Strongsville).
They pass by Mentor, Cleveland, and Mentor on the way up to Erie Pointe. That is the place I work. They visit Erie Pointe. This fictional city is situated on a fictional island that extends out into the lake. It turns out to be Lake Erie.
If you're familiar with this part of Ohio, Erie Pointe is shown on the close-but-hardly-exact map as being about midway between Mentor and Geneva, which would situate it around Perry or Madison.
My home is located just east of Geneva. Therefore, this Scooby-Doo mystery lies about half an hour away from where I grew up watching Scooby-Doo mysteries.
Erie Pointe, while not an actual area but it is a location that is very real. Living in the region for more than two-thirds of his life and having a fervent interest in monsters for the last three-quarters of his life, I regret to inform you that there's no Lake Monster from Erie Pointe.

The mystery isn't too complex, and anyone who's seen, for instance, the first episode of Scooby-Doo will be able to determine the identity of the witch within about the first second or so of the movie.
