To recognize our faults is very difficult. We have at least one situation during life when we have done wrong things or made mistakes. After that, we are afraid to admit what we have done. Sometimes we lie, sometimes we keep our secret forever, sometimes we refuse to recognize our faults.
Who is responsible for this? Who decided that it will be bad to tell the truth and recognize our mistakes.
I think the main reason that it is very comfortable for everyone. So all of us are guilty.
Besides, it is very fashionable today to be successful, but one of the parts of success is to be right. So if you admit your mistakes, you will be a loser.
I have a good example of my previous work. One of my colleague was very fair and honest. He told the truth even it was very uncomfortable for our manager.
If our manager asked us to do something stupid and meaningless, he always said that it wasn't a good idea to do it. Besides, he always admitted the tasks which were impossible to do for him.
Of course, he was fired.
I think it is one of the unfair moments and I didn't do anything to support him. But he was right and he wasn't afraid, to be honest, and tell the "uncomfortable" truth.
Reading this article, I think that he had real intellectual humility, not humiliation. Opposite, the rest of us were humiliated, because we knew the truth, but agreed with silly ideas. But it was comfortable for us because we didn't have any problems with our work and manager. It was comfortable for our manager because he had the flock of sheep which was ready to do everything. It was uncomfortable for one person, for him.
Now I understand that it was uncomfortable for him from the practical side, but his mind and soul were alright because he was honest with himself.
After this event, my point of view was changed. I am trying to recognize mistakes and tell the truth. It is a difficult and painful exercise but it is more important to be yourself than be a dogsbody.
