Understanding the correct PA in sunscreen?

As in the previous post I shared, the SPF is an index used to measure the ability to filter UVB rays that cause harm to human skin. In this article, I will discuss with everyone one more indicator in the sunscreen that we should keep in mind when choosing to buy it is the PA index.

Specifically what it is we will see in the next sections.

What is PA in sunscreen?

PA with the English name is Protecttion Grade of UVA , unlike SPF, PA is an index used to measure the ability to filter UVA rays adversely affect human skin of sunscreen products. PA index published and issued by the Japan Cosmetic Association.

The PA index is divided into 04 different levels, each level will correspond to different UVA resistance including: PA +; PA ++; PA +++; PA ++++.

What are the 4 levels of detail? I will explain in more detail to everyone in the next section.

4 levels of PA in sunscreen

Like I do share the PA index is shown below 04 levels with the "+" sign attached instead of numbered like the SPF number. The greater the number of "+" marks, the longer the sunscreen maintains the UVA effect and vice versa.

However, not always on the sunscreen clearly shows the 04-level symbol as I shared above.

There are a number of variations you should also pay attention to to avoid being surprised. Typically, the sunscreen products originating from the UK or the US. Some of these products use the phrase "Broad Spectrum" or "Full Spectrum" instead of PA / SPF. This means the product is resistant to both UVA and UVB rays.

The significance of the levels of PA in sunscreen

For each level of the PA, women should pay attention to two main factors.

Ray filter time

  • PA + has a filter time of less than 4 hours.
  • PA ++ has a ray filtration time of 4-6 hours.
  • PA +++ has a beam filter time of 8-12 hours.
  • PA +++ has a beam filtration time of up to 16 hours.

Resistance to UVA rays

  • PA + is capable of filtering UVA rays at 50%.
  • PA ++ is capable of filtering UVA rays at 60% - 70%.
  • PA +++ is capable of filtering UVA rays at 90%.
  • PA ++++ is able to filter UVA rays above 95%.

How to choose a sunscreen with the right PA rating

For mild summer days

In days when it is not too hot or if you have normal skin and often sit in air-conditioned rooms, limit travel and exposure to the sun, the PA +++ level is suitable. Most sunscreens today are at this level.

For hot days

If you have to be constantly exposed to the sun, often travel for a long time in the sun, you should choose sunscreen products with PA at PA ++++. This will promote the full effect of sunscreen.

A small note that I repeat so that people do not forget is that no matter how much you choose a sunscreen with PA index, when going out should combine with other sun protection methods such as using a hat, Hats, gowns to ensure a comprehensive effect.

Above are some of my shares about PA index on current sunscreens. Please share this article if you find it helpful.
