Cut a dog's claws without pliers, without files and without fear
Your dog does not let his claws be cut at all and yet it is imperative to do it without delay? Is he terrified? Does he growl? Are you told that you have to “desensitize” it, which could take weeks? Others perhaps tell you that you need to be more authoritarian? But have you thought about playing?
Because it's a good solution when a dog hates having his paws touched and no one has ever cut a claw! Approaching the pliers or the file is like putting a knife to someone's throat and saying trust me.
The catastrophic situation
Due to a combination of circumstances, my dog went out less than usual on our precious asphalt.
His claws pushed, pushed. It had become catastrophic.
It's uncomfortable for a dog, and dangerous. He might hurt himself.
While taking her out again for a long time on the tarmac, I spent two weeks getting her used to a claw file, a battery-operated device (which, in itself, is really great – I mention it here ). But nothing to do. Here you can check out the best Dog Snuffle mats at Family Pooch.
I felt like I was wielding a chainsaw and being an executioner. And it was becoming so URGENT to shorten his claws.
As for the pliers to cut the claws, following an unfortunate incident a few years ago (with another dog), it is I who am traumatized.
The quick fix
The idea came from a video of a dog trainer on Youtube (Donna Hill) showing her dog scratching on a panel covered with sandpaper. It's my last resort. I need to try. I try… it works!
sandpaper (personally, I have "medium grit" paper and it files very, very well)
a rigid support that is best to tape the paper to (don't use staples or nails or anything!!!)
dog treats
Advice :
standing up, your dog has more strength to scratch
be sure to make him scratch with both paws so that one paw never falls behind the other
make sure you face your dog to better move the paper left / right and for him to scratch hard enough
do short series one to three times a day so as not to tire your dog (personally, everything is back to normal in 2 days with 3 sessions a day)
