Good guys at Flannery O 'Connor are hard to find

Introduction:

Among a classic novels, Flannery O’Connor’ s a Good Man is Hard to Find is the one that can leave the readers the deepest impressions and what was depicted in the novel tend to linger in the readers’ mind because the story is not only shocking but also thought provoking.

The story seems to be as simple as a macabre story about how a family of six people had been murdered by a group of gangsters including a person called Misfit. It is usually considered to be a fiction about an ironic event involving death and injury. In fact, this novel is known to be exploring social problems in the world in the modern world. I think this novel has depicted in detail to the readers about the selfish desire that human being have in the world and the person who constantly says “I still believe that there is still a good man in the world” is indeed the most selfish person in the fiction.

The author Flannery O’Connor mainly focuses on the stories about a family who went on a trip together but the entire family had suffered tragic and sad sending because they were caught in an accident. After the accident, a group of gangsters who were led by the Misfit used guns to threaten them. During the middle of this tragic event, the old lady in the family tried to convince the gangster especially the Misfit not to murder them. In order to do that, she kept telling the Misfit to pray for himself and to believe that he can end up being a good person. In the end, all people were killed but the climax of the story is not about the horrible murder that had happened to the entire family.

On the contrary, seventy percent of the stories were about the meaningful conversations between the grandma as well as the leader of the gangsters Misfit. While the leader Misfit tried to threaten the old lady that he will murder all of her family members, she simply begged the Misfit by saying that she believed he is actually a good man. Besides, she kept asking the Misfit to pray and let her and her family live. However, the Misfit did not really pardon the old lady and her family but he chose to murder the entire family of the old lady brutally even though he hesitated for a while.

A lot of scholars and readers have studied this story through the perspective of religion, atonement as well as how human beings’ wrongs can be pardoned. However, I think this fiction is worth studying through the perspective of selfishness because the main character the old grandma has represented the selfish people in the society. just as Oscar Wilde had said, “selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live.” In the following paragraphs, proves of how the old lady is a selfish person who forces others to live her way will be presented in details.

It is true that the seem-to-be kindest person is actually one of the most selfish characters in Flannery O’Connor’ s fiction. In fact, although in the novel, it seems like the old grandma was the kindest person with a big heart because at the beginning of the novel, she kept saying that “I still believe in the world there are still good men.” It is obvious that she tried to impress the people in the fiction by preaching to them that it is important to have a good heart and be kind to other people. However, in fact, she represents the behavior of selfishness in the American society and in other societies as well.

Nowadays there are a lot of crimes being committed in the world. They have chosen to do this due to the greedy selfish desires such as wanting to own more money or yearning for a more comfortable life. However, for the old woman, her selfishness is not the same as the majority of criminals in our society because most of the criminals commit crime in order to gain material comfort based on the pain of other people but the old lady seems to be austere and she does not care for having a luxury life. However, this is the opposite. The old lady from the right beginning has shown to the readers that she is a selfish person who only wants to force other people to live her ways.

These are proves of the old lady’s trifle selfish desires. For example, at first, she did not want to go to Florida and she tried every way to find a variety of excuses to go to Tennessee. She complained at the beginning that she had no desire to go to such a place at all. However, as no one wanted to talk with her, she required her son to read the news about a killer who had fled to Florida and she would prefer to die rather than sending her kids to such a dangerous place. It seems like she cared about the safety of her children but in fact, she was only whining only because of her petty desire about wanting to go to Tennessee. This is one prove of her petty as well as the trifling desire.

Also, the old lady is a selfish person with double standards while she was dealing with details in daily life. When the entire family was about to get on the bus for their trip, she was the first one that had hopped on the bus to occupy the best seat in the bus, which is the middle on in the back row. Besides, she had taken a cat with her in secret while she never allowed her children to take the cat out with them. Later on, the lie she told about the golden floor obviously indicates that the old lady is like the other criminals who only care about themselves. For example, she wanted to have a look at the old house that she owned but in order to do that , she told a lie to the children that she knew a floor with gold in that place. After she said that, the children immediately got attracted and suddenly had the desire to go there. These might seem to be small details but they are proves that show that the old lady only pretended that she believed in goodness but she did every little thing for her own trifle desire and she is a selfish person.
