Dual-clutch Transmission Market: BorgWarner Inc., Getrag, ZF Friedrichshafen Looking to Strengthen their Position in Asia Pacific

Leading automotive dual-clutch transmission (DCT) system suppliers are focusing on Asia Pacific to increase their production and consolidate their position, according to a research report by Future Market Insights. Michigan-based BorgWarner Inc. is focusing on increasing production of DCTs in China to meet the increasing demand globally. The company views Asia Pacific as a lucrative region for selling components to OEMs. BorgWarner Inc. recently launched six-speed wet dual-clutch transmission in China for SAIC.

Germany-based Getrag is also planning to expand its DCT business in Asia Pacific. In 2014, the company signed a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Corp. to produce dual clutch transmission systems in China. It is anticipated that the company will launch manufacturing plants in China and India in the next 2-3 years.

ZF Friedrichshafen signed a joint venture with Chinese automotive manufacturer BAIC Motor to develop and assemble chassis systems. In a bid to strengthen its presence in Asia Pacific, the company expanded its headquarters to Shanghai, China.

Continent AG’s strategy is focused on migrating to all car segments and balancing its global footprint. The company is working towards developing advanced driver assistance system and automated technology.

Ireland-based Eaton Corporation is also targeting the emerging markets in Asia Pacific. Through a slew of acquisitions, the company is looking to consolidate its position in the dual-clutch transmission market. Its recent acquisitions include Jeil Hydraulics Co., Ltd., Cooper Industries, Rolec Commercial E Industrial S.A.

According to FMI, the global dual-clutch transmission market accounted for US$ 8,100 Mn in 2014. It is estimated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.25% during the period 2014-2020, and reach a valuation of US$ 15,356 Mn by 2020.

Asia Pacific Projected to witness the Fastest Growth during the Forecast Period

Western Europe is currently the largest market for dual-clutch transmission market, however, Asia Pacific is anticipated to outpace it after 2016. Asia Pacific accounted for a share of 31.8% in 2014 and FMI estimates the dual-clutch transmission market in the region to expand at a CAGR of 16.14% during the forecast period. The Asia Pacific dual-clutch transmission market is projected to be worth US$ 6,315 Mn by 2020.

According to FMI, dual-clutch transmission market is anticipated to gain traction in Asia Pacific as most of the leading companies are looking to strengthen their position in the region. Availability of cheap labour is enticing leading automotive transmission system companies to establish a physical presence in the region. FMI opines that China and India will emerge as key manufacturing hubs in the near future.

A key trend analysed by FMI in Asia Pacific’s dual-clutch transmission sector is that demand for low torque transmissions is increasing steadily owing to robust demand for small- and medium-sized vehicles.

Bulk of the demand for DCTs is coming from passenger vehicle manufacturers. According to FMI, the passenger vehicle with DCT will be worth US$ 4,933 Mn by 2020, whereas the commercial vehicle segment will be worth US$ 1,382 Mn.
