The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards are going down this weekend, and the ceremony plans to safely celebrate plenty of firsts.

The 2020 VMAs take place tonight (Sunday, August 30) at 8 p.m. ET and will air on MTV in addition to several other networks owned by ViacomCBS. (The pre-show at 6:30 p.m. ET will air on MTV only.) Networks airing the VMAs include:

2020 Video Music Awards - Where and when?

The 2020 VMAs will take place in New York City on Sunday, August 30th beginning at 8pm ET/PT and the VMAs Pre-Show will begin an hour and half earlier at 6:30pm ET/PT on MTV. However, this year's main show will be simultaneously broadcast across BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1 and The CW in addition to MTV.

Two new timely categories also cropped up for the 2020 edition of the awards show, best music video from home and best quarantine performance.

How to watch the MTV VMAs online for free in the US

The MTV VMAs will, of course, be broadcast on MTV, and are usually also shown on other related channels, including MTV2, VH1, and MTV Classic. While it hasn’t yet been announced for 2020, in previous years, the VMAs were shown across the Viacom network on channels including BET, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, and TV Land.

If you’re in the US, you can watch the show online via the MTV.com site. However, use of the live stream function does require that you log in with credentials from a US cable provider, such as AT&T, Spectrum, or DirecTV.
