Today covers the two social/interactional task types — Task 1 – Listen & Choose a Response and Task 2 – Listen to a Conversation. Both reward the same thing: reading a speaker's intent, not just their words.

🧠 Step 2 — The mindset that actually raises your score

Here's the truth most learners miss: your problem usually isn't listening ability — it's test-thinking and decision-making under pressure. That's why a task can feel "easy" but still score low. Train these five habits:

1. Think "WHY," not just "WHAT"

After every clip, ask: Why did the speaker say that? Why was that example given? TOEFL tests whether you understood the function, not whether you heard the words.

2. Know the 4 trap-answer types

Wrong options are usually one of: same words / wrong meaning · partially right (only half the idea) · too extreme · off-topic. Naming the trap makes it visible.

3. Eliminate — don't guess

First delete two clearly wrong options and be able to say why each is wrong. Guessing is banned.

4. Predict before you look

Before reading the options, say the expected answer in your own words. This drains the power of the trap answers.

5. Confidence check

After answering, ask: "Which sentence proves my answer?" If you can't point to one, you're probably wrong.

💡 The trap is choosing the literal answer instead of the socially appropriate one. After each miss ask: "What would a real English speaker actually say here?" Watch for options that reuse words from the audio — the correct reply usually uses different words.

For each, before checking answers, write a one-sentence summary of what it was about. And:

Identify speaker roles fast (student–student? student–staff? student–professor?) — role dictates tone.
Note the problem in the first 20 seconds, and the next step at the end (both are common questions).
Catch pivot signal words: "Actually…", "The thing is…", "Wait…".

10 min of any English sitcom (Friends, TBBT, HIMYM) for pragmatic exposure · 5 min accent rotation · +10 vocabulary words.

In Conversations, role dictates tone and the expected response — lock it in early.
If the speaker asks "Do you have the time?" don't look for yes/no — look for the functional reply ("It's a quarter past four.").
