Day 6 — Module 2: Read in Daily Life + Academic Passage
Phase I · Reading · Day 6 (Reading Day 3 of 3) · ⏱ ~2 hours
📍 You are here: Day 4 – Reading Orientation → Day 5 – Module 1 (Complete the Words) → Day 6 – Module 2 (Daily Life + Academic Passage)
Today closes out Reading. We drill the two Module 2 task types — Task 2 – Read in Daily Life and Task 3 – Read an Academic Passage — plus the timing strategy that ties the whole section together.
🎯 Today's goal: Master the 3 core reading skills and hit the timing targets on both Module 2 task types.
✅ You're done when: you've drilled 4 Daily Life items and 2 Academic Passages under time, and logged 10 new words.
⏰ Step 1 — Daily Warm-Up: Purpose, Detail & Inference
Read in Daily Life asks for the WHY (purpose), the WHAT (detail), or what's implied. Read each and answer.
🧭 Step 2 — The 3 essential reading skills · ~20 min
Everything in Module 2 rests on three skills:
- Scanning (the search): hunt for specific info — dates, names, numbers, prices.
- Skimming (the gist): read the first & last sentence of a paragraph for its main idea.
- Inference (between the lines): understand what's implied, not just stated. ("The lot is closed for paving" → you can't park there today.)

🎯 Step 3 — Read in Daily Life drill · ~30 min
Target: 4 items · ≤ 60 seconds each
- 🎮 mytoefl.io — hover over Reading → pick Read in Daily Life
- 🎮 Read in Daily Life — practice set
💡 "Purpose" questions test the WHY, "Action/Detail" questions test the WHAT. Match your answer type to the question word — and watch for synonym traps that reuse a word from the text but change the meaning.
🎓 Step 4 — Read an Academic Passage drill · ~35 min
Target: 2 passages · strict 6 minutes each (top scorers finish in 5:30, leaving margin).
- 🎮 mytoefl.io — hover over Reading → pick Academic Passage
- 🎮 FluentPrep — Reading practice
- 🎮 Academic Passage — practice set
💡 Read the questions first. Two minutes up front saves four minutes of re-reading.
➕ Extra (optional): run your drills against a full-screen timer so the clock becomes second nature.
⏱ Step 5 — Timing strategy for test day · ~10 min
The whole section is ~27 minutes for 35–48 items — under 45 seconds per item. Use these milestones:
- Finish Routing + Daily Life within the first 18 minutes.
- Leave the remaining ~9 minutes for the Academic Passage.
- Never "deep read" a 150-word email — scan straight to the answer.
📒 Step 6 — Build your vocabulary · ~10 min
Add 10 new academic words and review the previous days' words.

💡 Pro Tips
- Reading stamina matters. The 2026 section is faster than the old test — you can't afford to re-read paragraphs.
- Base every inference answer on the text only — never on personal knowledge or assumptions.
- Paraphrase the question and eliminate clearly wrong answers first.
- Read actively — after each paragraph, ask yourself "What was that about?"
