Life imitates art far more than art imitates life
Performance as a phenomenon of contemporary art.
Performance art is a form of the modern art. It includes either the artwork or the art exhibition, which is created through intriguing and sometimes even shocking actions of the artist or the group of artists. Performance art is also known as “artistic action”. It has been developed through the years as a genre of its own. Its art is
presented as “live”.
Traditionally, performance is interdisciplinary, which means that it may contain music, dance, painting, acting and other various forms of art.
Artworks, that we’ve used to see in art galleries and museums can take place in the public space and during any time period. Its goal is to cause an intensive emotional reaction and a share of the spirit of change. Usually, author tries to spread important information, recall people to action and show to public the problems, which are commonly related to artist’s own life experience. To attract attention of the audience, artists use different sound effects, theatrical reincarnations, bright unusual costumes.
Visual performance promotions can be divided into several types:
- Individual presentation, when the artist interacts with objects and elements of the environment without additional help.
- Collective actions of a group of actors.
- Happenings — in this case it means, that the viewers themselves become participants in the show, get involved in the process and actively interact with each other.
Summing all up, performance is an evolution in art, a rather rigid, sometimes absurd way to convey important information to the masses, but if art must feed the roots of our culture, society must set the artists free to follow their vision wherever it takes them to.
