The History of Football

Football is a sport in which the purpose is to kick the ball into the opponent’s goalmouth and score higher than them. The main restriction is that you are not allowed to touch the ball with your arms. Football is the most popular sport on the
planet: more than 2 million matches are played daily.

The first game of football, with the rules close to nowadays’, was held in 1872 in England. However, there were other games similar to football.

Ball games have been played in many countries. In China, this variation was called “Chu-Ke”, in ancient Sparta — "Episkros", and "Harpastum" in ancient Rome. Games were held in the Bryansk lands, where the leather ball was invented. It was the size of a human’s head, stuffed with feathers. These games were called “shalyga” and “keela”. And the ball was heavy. The Italians invented the Calcio game. It was similar in rules to football. They brought this game to the British Isles. It was "Calcio" that football began to gain popularity with, and soon, became the most popular sport.
