Caroline, or the most mysterious puppet movie
Caroline- is one of those cartoons, that both children and adults re-watch every autumn, to immerse yourself into this both frightening, but warm atmosphere. This masterpiece of puppet cinematography was shot as many as 15 years ago, in the year of 2009. A huge group of professionals worked hard for the long 4 years on the project, and it was worth it. Because of that, the creation turned out so full and captivating. Henry Selick, the producer and also the creator of this piece, shot not only the puppet movie, but came up with a whole universe. It has been delighting the audience with its atmosphere and favorite characters for 15 years now. And also with an inexhaustible supply of riddles and references, still hiding in this fantastic world…And that’s why most of the spectators might sense a strange, unusual feeling of losing or not noticing something. Even if these secrets are not seen for everyone and not available for all of the audience, who haven’t quite understand the plot and hidden meanings, they are easily opened for true connoisseurs and secret lovers. And today we will reveal some of them.
Коралина в стране кошмаров - это один из тех мультфильмов, который и дети и взрослые пересматривают каждую осень, чтобы погрузиться в эту одновременно пугающую, но теплую атмосферу.
Этот шедевр кукольной кинематографии был снят целых 15 лет назад, в 2009 году. Огромная группа профессионалов трудилась долгие 4 года над проектом, и оно того стоило. Из-за этого произведение получилось таким наполненным и завораживающим. Генри Селик, режиссер и по совместительству создатель этой картины, снял не просто кукольный мультфильм, он придумал целую вселенную. Она уже 15 лет радует зрителей своей атмосферой и любимыми персонажами. А так же неиссякаемым запасом загадок и отсылок, до сих пор скрывающихся в этом фантастическом мире… Именно поэтому у многих зрителей при просмотре возникает странное, необычное ощущение того, что они что-то упускают и не замечают.
Хоть эти тайны незаметны всем зрителям и недоступны для тех, кто не особо разбирался в сюжете и скрытых смыслах, они легко откроются истинным ценителям и любителям секретов. И сегодня мы раскроем вам некоторые из них.
At the very beginning of the cartoon the «Other mother» in her true face takes an unknown for us doll and remakes it into the Caroline. At first, it may seem as an ordinary scene, but only with a plot development it can be guessed that the first version of this toy has belonged to grandma Zaki’s sister, who many years ago had disappeared under unknown circumstances, and only in the end came to us in the form of a ghost, trapped in another world. This detail is not that hidden from our eyes, but many people anyways missed it even after watching the entire movie. Also, after having learned that part, we can understand where Zaki got the Caroline doll, and why he received it from his grandma.
В самом начале мультфильма «Другая мама» в своем истинном обличии берет неизвестную нам куклу и переделывает ее в Коралину.
Сначала это может показаться обычной сценой, но только с развитием сюжета можно догадаться, что первая версия этой игрушки принадлежала сестре бабушки Закки, которая много лет назад пропала при неизвестных обстоятельствах, и лишь в конце являлась нам в виде привидения, заточенного в другом мире.
Эта деталь не так сильно скрыта от наших глаз, но многие зрители все равно упустили её даже после полного просмотра мультика. Так же, узнав эту деталь можно понять откуда у Закки появилась кукла Каролины, и почему ему отдала ему бабушка.
After that, we are shown the house itself and Mr.Bobinsky, who is a neighbour of the new residents of a «Pink Palace». This character is very interesting and unusual, if we will look into him deeply. Firstly, on the building’s facade around the door, which leads to Mr.Bobinsky, we can see the flag, that depicts the national coat of arms of Russia. The character himself is Russian. As the plot develops, we can notice one more interesting fact-the presence of a medal on his chest, that in USSR was given for the liquidation of consequences of an accident in Chernobyl. Maybe, it is his past work that can explain this unusual skin colour, and also that Mr.Bobinsky all the time says to Caroline that she must eat more beetroot to be healthy. The thing is that before, beetroot was counted as a product that somehow cleanses from radiation. That’s why, at first glance, this this unremarkable minor character, in fact can carry within itself a lot more meaning, that it may seem to have.
После этого нам показан сам дом и мистер Бобинский, который является соседом новых жителей «Розового дворца». Этот персонаж очень интересен и необычен, если рассматривать его глубже. Во-первых, на фасаде здания около двери, которая ведет к мистеру Бобинскому, можно увидеть флаг, на котором изображен герб России. Сам персонаж же является русским. По мере развития сюжета,мы можем заметить еще один интересный факт- наличие на его груди медали, которую в СССР выдавали за ликвидацию последствий аварии в Чернобыле. Возможно, именно его прошлой работой можно объяснить этот необычный цвет кожи, а также то, что мистер Бобинский все время говорит Каролине, что нужно есть больше свеклы, и тогда она будет здорова. Дело в том, что раньше считалось, что свекла является неким очищающим от радиации продуктом. Поэтому на первый взгляд этот ничем не приметный второстепенный персонаж на самом деле может нести в себе гораздо больше смысла, чем нам кажется.
After a small acquaintance with one of the Coraline’s neighbours, we are moving to the truck with stuff, which drives up to the house. On its facade we can see the phrase «Ranft Brothers», after which we see brothers themselves, presented as loaders. In fact, they are real-life people, who made a huge contribution in creating Pixar movies. One of them passed away in 2005, that’s why the creators decided to pay tribute to the brothers, including them in this moment of the cartoon. After that scene, one of the loaders asks for tips, for which he receives only a measly dollar. But instead of putting George Washington on it, they put there their director Henry Selick.
После небольшого знакомства с одним из новых соседей Каролины мы перемещаемся к грузовику с вещами, который подъезжает к дому. На его фасаде можно заметить фразу «Ranft Brothers», после чего мы видим самих братьев, представленных в виде грузчиков. На самом деле это реально существующие люди, которые внесли огромный вклад в создание мультфильмов Pixar. Один из них умер в 2005 году, поэтому,создатели решили отдать дань уважения братьям, включив их в этот момент мультфильма. После этой сцены один из грузчиков просит чаевые на что получает лишь один жалкий доллар. Но вместо Джорджа Вашингтона авторы поместили туда своего режиссера Генри Селика.
To the other side of the world leads a small door on the wall, where Caroline barely fits even if she crawls. This door, in the original voice acting, is called «dolly», which is a direct reference to everything, what happens on the other side of this door. What’s also interesting is that the key of it looks no less suspicious because there is a button on its handle. In fact, the cartoon itself is based on hidden details in a form of buttons, beetles, mouses and many other little things, referring us to the true essence of the magical world, in which Caroline gets into, according to the plot. This masterpiece of puppet animation features even the reference to the first «Harry Potter» movie and the scene with flying keys. And because in the other world girl had all of her dreams and wishes come true, the creators let us understand that the main character herself is a fan of Joanne Rowling’s books and films. Also, this scene could be explained by the love of the director himself towards works about «The Boy Who Lived».
В другой мир ведет маленькая дверца в стене, куда Коралина еле помещается даже ползком. Эту дверь в оригинальной озвучке девочка называет «кукольной», что является прямой отсылкой на всё, что происходит по другую сторону этой двери. Что еще интересно, так это то, что ключ от неё выглядит не менее подозрительно, ведь на его ручке находится пуговица. На самом деле, сам мультфильм в целом построен на незаметных деталях в виде пуговиц, жуков, мышей и многих других мелочей, отсылающих нас к истинной сущности волшебного мира, в который по сюжету попадает Коралина. В этом шедевре кукольной мультипликации присутствует даже отсылка на первую часть «Гарри Поттера» и сцену с летающими ключами. А так, как в другом мире у девочки исполняются все ее мечты и желания, создатели дают нам понять, что сама главная героиня является фанаткой книг и фильмов Джоан Роулинг. Также эту сцену можно объяснить любовью самого режиссера к произведениям о «Мальчике, который выжил».
These both vivid and hidden moments can be seen throughout the entire film. For instance, we are hinted about the true nature of «Other mother», called «Beldam» from an early beginning. When Caroline gets to the fortune teller neighbours, one of them predicts the Caroline’s future on tea leaves, telling that something terrible is coming. In that moment, we are seen with the tea residue in a mug. And here the most attentive spectators will notice the outline of a bony hand of the «Other mother» in her true appearance. Like in the moment, when Caroline gets into the other world in her first time and they bring her the cake with an inscription «Welcome home!». At first, it all seem to be cute and friendly, but as the mother offers to play hide and seek, there’s a thunderstorm outside, and the lightning flashed outside the window literally repeats the fortune teller grandmas’ prediction in a form of another menacing hand.
Такие одновременно яркие и незаметные моменты, можно встретить почти на протяжении всего мультфильма. Например, нам намекают на истинную сущность «Другой мамы», именуемую «Бильдам» еще с самого начала. Когда Коралина попадает к соседкам-гадалкам, одна из них предсказывает на чаинках будущее девочки, говоря что грядет нечто ужасное. В этот момент нам показывают как выглядят остатки чая в кружке. И тут самые внимательные зрители заметят очертание костлявой руки «Другой мамы» в её истинном обличии. Как и в моменте, когда Коралина первый раз попадает в другой мир и ей приносят торт с надписью «Добро пожаловать домой!». Сначала все кажется очень милым и доброжелательным, но как только мама предлагает поиграть Каролине в прятки, за окном начинается гроза, а молния мелькнувшая за окном буквально повторяет предсказание бабушек-гадалок в виде еще одной грозной руки.
When she enters their home, she is welcomed by the friendly grandmas, offering her some tea with candies. Little who noticed, that exactly that bowl with candies, which was given to Caroline, slightly differs from the other ones. It’s the only one that stays on that place with no children’s silhouette, which symbolizes Coraline as the next Beldam’s victim, known to us as the «Other mother». Also, near each bowl with sweets, the dates were written, indicating the year when children were kidnapped.

Мало кто заметил, что именно та емкость с конфетами, которую предложили Каролине, слегка отличается от остальных. Она единственная стоит на том месте, где нет детского силуэта, что символизирует Коралину, как следующую жертву Бильдам, известную нам как “Другая мама”. Также около каждой чаши со сладостями написаны даты, обозначающие год, когда были похищены дети.
Also, the majority of the hidden messages become available to the audience only after watching the movie in the original voice acting, like, for example, the Beldam’s phrase, when she threw Caroline into captivity in the mirror. At the same time, she says that she needs to “think about her behaviour”. It’s interesting that in the original version, she uses the word «reflect», which has two meanings: ponder and mirror. Another example is a song about Caroline, which in one of the episodes was performed by the «Other Father». In the last lines of this, seemingly harmless song literally said: “Our eyes will be on Caroline”. So we learn about the other mother’s intention to give the girl eye buttons instead of regular ones in the very beginning.
Также большая часть скрытых посланий становится доступна зрителям только после просмотра в оригинальной озвучке, как например фраза Бильдам, когда она бросала Коралину в заточение в зеркало. При этом она говорит что ей надо “поразмыслить над своим поведением”. Интересно то, что в оригинале она использует слово reflect, имеющее сразу два значения: поразмыслить и отражать. Еще одним примером является песня про Коралину, которую в одном из эпизодов исполнил “Другой папа”. В последних строчках этой, казалось бы безобидной песенки буквально говорится:” У Каролины будут наши глаза”. То есть о намерении другой мамы дать девочке глаза пуговицы вместо обычных мы узнаем в самом начале.
What else can be said about the musical accompaniment in this cartoon, is that Bruno Coulais worked on it. He managed to write around 32 soundtracks, which are present throughout the entire story. They convey the atmosphere so perfectly and fit into the plot, that sometimes a spectator even do not notice the presence of music while watching. Nevertheless, in this project, there are two tracks that became cult. And at the beginning it may seem, that they are sung in French language, but actually it’s just a made up language, or more precisely just a set of sounds, similar to it. It adds the movie more charm and uniqueness. And the similarity with French can be explained by the composer himself coming from France.
Что еще можно сказать о музыкальном сопровождении в этом мультике, так это то, что над ним трудился Брюно Куле. Ему удалось написать около 32 саундтреков, которые присутствуют на протяжении всей истории. Они настолько идеально передают атмосферу и вливаются в сюжет, что иногда, при просмотре зритель даже не замечает наличие музыки. Тем не менее, в этом проекте присутствует два трека, которые стали культовыми. И по началу может показаться, что в них поется на французском языке, но на самом деле это лишь выдуманный язык, точнее просто набор звуков, похожий на него. Это придает мультфильму еще больше шарма и необычности. А схожесть с французским можно объяснить тем, что сам композитор родом из Франции.
In some time they show us every child in Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night”’s background. , which is very symbolic because the painter himself brought in the painting the meaning: “It hints at the duality of existence, where storm and calm, light and shadow, life and death exist side by side, eternally intertwined in the dance of being.” That painting literally delivers the entire essence of a cartoon, where two completely different worlds coexist close to each other.
Через некоторое время нам показывают всех детей на фоне картины Ван Гога “Звездная ночь”, что является очень символичным ведь сам художник внес в эту картину следующий смысл:”Она намекает на двуединство существования, где буря и покой, свет и тень, жизнь и смерть существуют бок о бок, вечно переплетаясь в танце бытия.” Данная картина буквально передает всю суть мультфильма, где два абсолютно разных мира сосуществуют рядом друг с другом
The entire animated movie is based on clear and vivid comparison of the two universes, that are the opposites of each other; one universe is a grey real world, while another one is light and colourful fantasy, where even a boy with an ice cream from the picture, hanging in the living room, is happy with a whole ice cream in hand.
Весь мультфильм строится на четком и ярком сравнении двух вселенных, которые являются противоположностями друг друга- одна вселенная это серый реальный мир, а вторая светлая и красочная фантазия, где даже мальчик с мороженым с картины, висящей в гостиной, радостный, с целым мороженым в руке.
But the truth is that these two worlds are practically the same. Because in both of them evil and kindness exist. That puppet movie teaches their spectators that they need to learn seeing good things even there, where it would seem impossible. The authors wanted to show that for us to be happy, it’s not necessary to live in a world of fiction, we need to find happiness and positivity in ourselves and share it with the surrounding people. Then every, even the most grey and gloomy universe, would turn into the fairy tale.
Но правда в том, что два этих мира практически одинаковые. Ведь и там и там есть и зло и добро. Этот кукольный мультфильм учит своих зрителей тому, что надо учиться видеть хорошее даже там, где его, казалось бы, нет. Авторы хотели показать, что, чтобы быть счастливым не обязательно жить в выдумке, надо лишь научиться находить радость и позитив в себе и делиться им с окружающими. Тогда любая, даже самая серая и мрачная вселенная превратится в сказки
