Flu Season Precautions

Before the flu season is at your threshold, you need to keep a few things in mind. Especially so, if you have kids around the corner. Did you know that the term “flu” is not the word that depicts the disease? Flu is the trimmed version of the word “Influenza”.

A few simple precautions can keep the flu at bay this coming flu season and you need to abide by them especially if there are old people, children, or elders with diabetes at home! Let us talk about the flu shot at first.

The flu shot is a vial that contains the flu vaccine. It is so commonly in use that you not only get them at the pharmacies but also your nearest grocery! Flu shots, though widely in use, are encircled by some popular myths. Now, these myths should be busted to spread awareness concerning the proper and timely use of these vaccines.

  • No matter where you get the flu shot from the effectiveness remains unaltered.
  • Although flu shots are made from a single protein of the flu virus, they do not necessarily make you catch flu! In fact, they stimulate the immune system to protect you against it.
  • A flu vaccine never guarantees that you won't get the flu. It only reduces the severity and chances of contracting the same!

No. “Good habits” are a must to protect yourself during the season. You certainly need to adhere to the following –

  • Wash or sanitize your hands. Hand rubbing for at least 20 seconds (with the sanitizer or soap) is crucial.
  • We usually keep the doors and windows shut during the winter season that allows the virus to spread faster. Let the fresh air in to avoid inhaling the same stale air!
  • Preferably, keep your face (nose, eyes, and mouth area) “touch-free”!
