Finnish Parliament hit by cyberattack attributed to Russian hackers
Finnish parliament website was temporarily down on Aug 9 following a hacker attack that coincided with President Biden’s move to admit the Nordic country to NATO.
The Finnish parliament tweeted that a denial-of-service attack hit the parliament’s external websites at around 2:30 p.m. local time:
The Parliament takes steps to limit the attack together with service providers and the Cybersecurity Center.
On Aug 10, the parliament said on Twitter that the website returned to normal on Tuesday night.
The attack against the Finnish parliament occurred the same day Biden signed a measure backing Finland and Sweden’s admittance into NATO.
Both Finland and neighboring Sweden are waiting for the 30 NATO member states to ratify their entry into the group. The process, however, remains up in the air because of the reluctance of Turkey, which has not yet completed its part and threatens not to do so if the Nordic countries do not fulfill certain commitments in the fight against terrorism.
The other day, communications company Twilio has confirmed hackers accessed customer data after successfully tricking employees into handing over their corporate login credentials.
