August Sicard von Sicardsburg was an Austrian architect best remembered as the co-architect of the Vienna State Opera, together with his partner Eduard van der Nüll. Born in Buda on December 6, 1813, he studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology under Peter von Nobile. He became a professor at the Vienna Academy in 1843. He died of tuberculosis on June 11, 1868, six weeks after van der Nüll committed suicide. Neither architect lived to see the opening of the Vienna State Opera in 1869.

In the 1860s, Sicardsburg and van der Nüll were commissioned to design the new court opera house in Vienna. The building was intended to be a symbol of the grandeur of the Habsburg monarchy. Their design was in the Neo-Renaissance style, with elaborate ornamentation and a grand staircase.
The construction of the Vienna State Opera was controversial from the start. The public criticism was intense, and both architects were deeply affected. Eduard van der Nüll, unable to bear the humiliation, committed suicide on April 3, 1868.
Sicardsburg was devastated by the loss of his partner. He had been suffering from tuberculosis, and his health declined rapidly. He died on June 11, 1868, just six weeks after van der Nüll. Neither architect lived to see the opening of the Vienna State Opera on May 25, 1869.
