TOEFL Reading: Как справиться с вопросами NOT или EXCEPT
В тесте часто встречаются вопросы подобного рода:
- All of the following are mentioned in the paragraph as characteristics of jellyfish EXCEPT
- Which of the following is NOT discussed in the passage?
«Всё из следующих характеристик медузы упомянуты в абзаце, кроме...»
«Какие из следующих характеристик не обсуждаются в абзаце?»
И вот тут сдающих начинает ломать голову: «Как узнать, что не упомянуто?»
Фактически, нужно искать НЕ ТО, что НЕ упомянуто, А ТО, что упомянуто.
Возьмем этот небольшой абзац:
«One of the most intriguing aspects of the foraging strategy of leatherback turtles is the almost complete reliance of such a large-bodied animal on a diet of jellyfish, a low-energy food source. It has been estimated that hatchling leatherbacks may consume more than twice their body-weight per day. However, both the remote location of foraging and the subsurface consumption of prey have prevented verification of such estimates. Found throughout the world's oceans, jellyfish are patchily distributed, but occur predictably at high densities in specific areas and at certain times of year. Temperate coastal shelf waters of the North Atlantic are characterized by high concentrations of jellyfish during the summer months.»

Как разобраться, что верно, а что нет?
Прежде всего, примените технику scanning, или пройдитесь по тексту глазами в поиске ключевых слов.
Давайте проверим что-нибудь, аналогичное смыслу варианта № 1, «⬭They are found in oceans all over the world», синонимы, антонимы с отрицанием, перефразирование тоже подойдет. Смотрим и сразу находим: «Found throughout the world's oceans.» Этот ответ отпадает, так как в абзаце говорится об этом.
Попытаемся с вариантом № 2. Идем по тексту, и видим: «the foraging strategy of leatherback turtles is the almost complete reliance of such a large-bodied animal on a diet of jellyfish, a low-energy food source.» Ямайская черепаха ест медуз.
«⬭ They are a food source for leatherback turtles.» Данная опция тоже отпадает, так как автор уже писал об этом.
Вариант № 3: «⬭ They are not evenly distributed in all regions of the sea.» Ищем что-то похожее в абзаце, например, глаголы связки или существительные, а также их синонимы и находим: «jellyfish are patchily distributed, but occur predictably...» Выходит, данная опция тоже отпадает.
Что у нас осталось? Вариант № 4.
«⬭ They are notable for consuming more than they weigh.» Верен ли этот вариант? Давайте проверим.
Смотрим и видим: «may consume more than twice their body-weight per day.» Черепахи известны тем, что могут съесть в два раза больше своего веса. Однако, вопрос про JELLYFISH! Поэтому это единственный верный вариант.
