The lights of your car: how they are and when to use them

The lights not only clear the way, they also warn others of where we occupy it. But putting the lights is more than turning the lighting control: to each circumstance corresponds a type of lighting. The driver must know how to interpret the circumstances, adjust the speed and choose the lighting according to each moment.

In any case, adequate lighting and in perfect condition is essential, since the car's lights are decisive in emergencies, immobilizations on poorly lit roads, driving on twisted roads or inside a tunnel.

Therefore, it is crucial to have a correct lighting at all times, check all the lighting components of the vehicle (not forgetting taillights, brake, reverse and fog) and check the headlight adjustment (especially if the car goes loaded, since it is more possible to dazzle). And if suddenly someone dazzles you, slow down progressively until you stop if necessary.

The lighting of your vehicle car equips, among others, these six types of lights that serve both to see and to be seen. Now we explain when each of them is used:

Lights to see

Dipped light (short)

They are used at night, always, on all roads and during the day, on all roads with fog, heavy rain, snowfall or clouds of dust or smoke. Of course, at all times in tunnels, reversible lanes, additional and enabled to drive in the opposite direction.

It is not mandatory, but it is advisable to drive with the low beam lights on during the day since the vehicles are better distinguished. By the way, the daytime running lights equipped by some vehicles do not replace short-range lighting.

Road light (long)

They are used only at night, on poorly lit roads. The rule indicates that when a license plate is not read at 10 meters or a dark vehicle at 50 meters, traveling at more than 40 km / h.

It should be changed to the dipped beam if it dazzles pedestrians and other drivers in the front or by rear-view mirrors. It should not be used in town. On highways and highways, you must also change them for the short ones whenever another vehicle comes in front, even if there is a medium one.

Front fog

In some circumstances, the main lighting (crossing and road) is insufficient and it is necessary to "add" other lights. Fogs are light reinforcements when visibility decreases due to heavy rain, snow or thick fog or dense clouds of smoke or dust.

It is a powerful light, low and wide, useful to follow the lines of the edge of the road. It can be used in isolation or together with those of short and long range. It should not turn on as soon as it rains a little because it can disturb. It is not mandatory and not equipped by all vehicles, although it is useful on narrow roads with successive curves marked by its greater lateral reach.

Lights to be seen

Reverse

They are one or two white lights that automatically turn on when the gear is engaged.

Its function is to warn drivers and pedestrians that the car is driving backwards. In addition, it also illuminates the rear of the vehicle when maneuvering, which is very useful at night or when parking in underground parking.

Position

These lights always accompany the short, long and fog lights and indicate the position and width of the vehicle.

If you immobilize your vehicle on the road or on the side of a road, you must turn on the position lights to make it visible. Of course, never circulate only with the position lights, they do not illuminate.

Rear fog

They are one or two red lights, more intense than those of position, located behind to avoid scopes. Its use is mandatory for all vehicles (except motorcycles), to signal their situation when there is thick fog, heavy rain or snow, or dense clouds of smoke or dust.

It should only be turned on in especially unfavorable conditions with dense fog, rain or heavy snow, since misused, is annoying and dazzles the drivers behind.
