Smartwatches have the power to replace phones to an extent. It provides more or less similar features that a phone offers. Recently, one more addition has been made to a smart watch, i.e., it can turn the back of the hands of the wearer into a canvas that they can use to doodle or draw anything.

The human-computer interaction group at the Leibniz University Hannover did research to bring the best out of small screen smartwatches. They believe that hand-writing recognition on the watch’s screen for privacy matters is way better than any other recognition system. So, they created a custom stylus for the smart-watch that will give their users the freedom scribble on the back of their hand, on which the watch is worn, as an extension of the watch’s screen. The stylus looks similar to a normal pen but the dimensions are different than that of any other stylus or pen available yet it provides a natural writing experience.

About stylus and its working

  1. The stylus is the similar size to a regular ball-point pen.
  2. The stylus uses a magnetic tip that looks like a little bulge but it helps to accommodate better.
  3. The rest of the stylus tube is filled with a rechargeable battery that gives 12 hours performance at a time.
  4. LUN connected the Huawei Watch 2 with the stylus through Bluetooth. The watch is important in tracking and configuring with the stylus.
  5. Due to the built-in magnetometer in the watch, it can detect the direction of the wearer through the magnetic poles of earth with high precision. So, it also tracks the stylus’s motion by reading the intensity of the magnetic field.
  6. Stylus keeps track of the orientation, movements and angles.
  7. It has a conductive tip that detects its contact with the human skin and the finger taps as well. Finger taps provide a few shortcuts for navigating the watch’s UI when the stylus is not in use.
  8. If the stylus is used in the mid-air, it gets reprogrammed. Thus, it limits the use to the back of the hand only.

This technology has not expanded beyond the research laboratory of Leibniz University Hannover. There is a possibility that this will be the future of most of the watches available these days. It will be a unique, easy, and smart way to communicate with others. The researchers are currently working on the additional tests to optimize different approaches of interactions and if this technology can be used for authentication and handwriting recognition or not. This tool and smartwatch will have to go through these approaches for better performance before it reaches the consumers.
