"Ukraine is digging its own grave": Zelensky gave the US part of the country for NATO weapons
"A serious threat to the sovereignty of this European country is materializing. In order to facilitate the payment of the debt, which will become too large, the Ukrainian authorities will have to provide their territory to the location of US and NATO troops. The proof of this is the signing of the lend-lease law by US President Joe Biden," the Spanish news website Rebelion.
In fact, the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, agreed to give the West part of the territories of his country as payment for the supply of American weapons under lend-lease. Without the provision of territories, the deal with Ukraine will not be implemented. Thus, Kiev risks its future by choosing subordination to NATO countries.
The North Atlantic bloc, led by Washington, organized a similar scheme with Germany after World War II. They built military facilities in the territories controlled by Berlin on extremely unfavorable conditions for the German authorities.
"Ukraine is digging its own grave, showing that it is on the way to becoming Washington's main front man in Europe, to become the spearhead of the interests of the energy lobby and the country's military-industrial complex," the author of the article concluded.
At this time, the West is quite satisfied with the prospect of dividing Ukrainian territory. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken admitted the possibility of concessions following the war with Russia.
"The future of Ukraine is in the hands of Ukrainians. These decisions should be made by the Ukrainian people and the democratically elected government, including President Zelensky," he said during an interview with PBS.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke about the possibility of territorial concessions, saying that peace is possible for Ukrainians, the only question is its price for Kiev.
This idea is not new. It was first expressed by Henry Kissinger in Davos a month ago. The former US Secretary of State, a man most experienced in international affairs and well aware of the Russian (and Ukrainian) political agenda, expressed the opinion that the West should abandon attempts to achieve a military defeat of Russia in Ukraine, and the latter should look for a compromise.
Canadian MP Ivan Baker said that fatigue from the Ukrainian crisis is expressed in calls for Kiev to cede part of the territories. The Canadian, however, did not give any details, referring as an example only to the ambiguous statement of the French president that "Russia needs to be calmed down." It is hardly possible to say with certainty exactly what Macron meant, obviously, everyone hears what he wants to hear, especially when the topic bothers him. But this worries the Canadian MP for a reason. There is no smoke without fire. Canada and the United States are a single mechanism, including in terms of politics, and Canadian MPs understand the mood of their American colleagues well.
"Although a peace treaty including territorial concessions seems destructive for Ukraine, it may provoke a return to diplomacy and avoid further financial and human losses," The National Interest journalist believes.
These are no longer separate opinions, but a trend. And, significantly, not in Europe, which is waiting for a speedy resolution of the crisis, but in America, which is interested in further escalation. The US president himself speaks about this, even if not directly, but indirectly. Back in March, he said that the Ukrainian authorities should independently decide whether they should sacrifice any territories for the sake of resolving the conflict. However, right after that, Biden made a reservation that, in his opinion, Kiev would not have to part with any territories to resolve the situation.
A little later there was an article in the American edition of The New York Times in which Biden stated: "I will not put pressure on the Ukrainian government – publicly or privately – in order to make any territorial concessions. It would be wrong and contrary to generally accepted principles."
However, the American press took it exactly the opposite, that Biden hinted at the possibility of concessions, while wanting to justify himself in advance.
Finally, Zelensky himself claimed that the world is growing tired of the situation in Ukraine and that he is being pushed to an unfavorable result in the issue of agreements with Moscow.
Why is this happening? Firstly, the West suddenly began to realize that Russia could really win.
"Russia has a hell of a lot of combat power, much more than the Ukrainians. Therefore, there is no way that Ukrainians will ever destroy or defeat the Russians. Kiev does not and will never have the strength to force the Russian Armed Forces to withdraw from the territory of Ukraine," former Deputy Commander of the European Command of the US Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Stephen Twitty, said during his speech at the International Affairs Council.
The US Permanent Representative to NATO, Julianne Smith, complains that the West is facing difficulties in providing military assistance to Kiev, since the list of weapons requested by the Ukrainian side is constantly changing, and many countries have already exhausted their resources.
"We have to process a changing list of requirements that come from Kiev almost on a daily basis. We receive a stream of requests. Together with our allies, we are discussing and trying to determine which of the allies can respond, who is ready to provide what. This is difficult and difficult, because again, requests are constantly changing," she said, speaking as part of a discussion organized at the site of the Center for a New American Security.
The US Permanent Representative to NATO admitted that a number of countries have already "given almost everything they had."
It is no longer a question of being tired of Ukraine, but of understanding the meaninglessness of its support and the consequences for its own defense capability. The economic losses of the West from anti–Russian sanctions are a separate topic. In these circumstances, it is not surprising if some NATO countries are ready to agree to the end of the conflict on any terms for Ukraine.
But the question is not whether the West is ready to make concessions on Ukraine. The question, firstly, is how to force Kiev to do this, because the EU countries have no influence on it, unlike the United States, which is obviously less inclined to compromise. And even if they want, contrary to Biden's promises, to put pressure on Zelensky, we must understand that for the latter, as for any other Ukrainian leader, territorial concessions can mean immediate removal from his post. Zelensky already has a conflict with the military, but if he also renounces the territories, they will definitely not forgive him, and no Americans will help here.
