A Discussion of Essay Format and Styles
When writing academic papers such as essays, professors assign different formats and style students must follow. Sad to say, few of them know how to do it the right way. • MLA Style - Mostly used for school assignments, this essay format cites books, newspapers, web resources and journals. It should be written in an 8.5 by 11 inch paper, must be double space, has 1″ margin on all sides and using either Arial or Times New Roman in size 12. Also known as “parenthetical citation style”, this format gives credit to the sources located at the latter part of the paper.
• APA Style - This style is prominent in research papers and thesis work but can also be used in critical essays. They share common rules with MLA it’s just that in APA, it is divided into four parts which is title, abstract, body and bibliograpy or reference. The header must consist of 2 to 3 words of the essay title then 5 spaces followed by the page number. Title page consists of full heading, name of the writer and the university where the essay will be published or submitted. The abstract consists of 120 word summary of the whole essay. Bibliography lists all the resources and materials used in making the essay possible.
Citation style varies on which writing format a writer used. Say for instance in Harvard Style, the author’s name, page number and the year it was published are essential since this style is known for referencing the author and the date in citing references.
