14. Verb भू (to be, to become) 

The meaning of the verb भू is similar to the meaning of the verb अस्.

The verb भू (to be, to become) has three third-person forms in the present tense.

• भवति (third person, singular) is
• भवतः (third person, dual) two are
• भवन्ति (third person, plural) are

When a sentence has no verb, the verb अस् or भू is implied.

Singular Number

सः बालकः।

saḥ bālakaḥ He is a child.

सः बालकः अस्ति।

saḥ bālakaḥ asti He is a child.

सः बालकः भवति।

saḥ bālakaḥ bhavati He is a child.

Dual Number

तौ बालकौ।

tau bālakau They two are children.

तौ बालकौ स्तः।

tau bālakau staḥ They two are children.

तौ बालकौ भवतः।

tau bālakau bhavataḥ They two are children.

Plural Number

ते बालकाः।

te bālakāḥ They are children.

ते बालकाः सन्ति।

te bālakāḥ santi They are children.

ते बालकाः भवति।

te bālakāḥ bhavati They are children.
