An Emerging Filmmaker

Ken Ngwa’ talent for filmmaking was first given to the world in 2018 with his critically-acclaimed movie Scam Republique wowed audiences at the New York Hip Hop Film Festival. Today, Africans comprise 5.1% of all immigrants to the United States. With this increased education a new American identity has formed, the American African. Today we profile the American- African director Ken Ngwa. He has a new film called Nature Boy which discusses a taboo subject within the Black community, the relations between African and African American people. Ken Ngwa is a filmmaker/businessman based in Brooklyn, New York. He is the founder and CEO of Sun People Productions a company which primarily focuses on inclusivity and diversity in digital representation. “I never saw anyone who was like myself growing up in the media. I come from an inward facing Immigrant community. I couldn’t name a Chicago Bull but Michael Jordan but I could tell you the newest news in Yaounde, Cameroon, or the newest happenings occurring in Paris. This was my reality.” A new generation of African filmmakers are drawing on that rich cultural heritage while striking out on their own, telling contemporary stories through new techniques and aesthetics. Ken Ngwa is an up-and-coming director from Cameroon though raised in Chicago; his work is steeped in the culture and voice of his homeland with two Staff Picks, his feature film, “Scam Republique” and music video, “New Bosses” under his belt. His upcoming film Nature Boy, is fresh.Through stunning shots and a hauntingly sparse soundtrack, Nature Boy captures nostalgic and painful moments of teenage life in Chicago. According to the Hollywood Insider various distribution companies are vying for rights. Nature Boy is a look at conflict in Chicago’s hardest-hit neighborhoods, from a suburban black perspective. If it makes you uncomfortable, take a breath; you’re right where the film wants you to be. @kenngwa @sunpeopleproductions
