Hearing protection devices are devices worn in or over the ears to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. There are several types of hearing protection devices such as earmuffs, earplugs, hearing bands, and others. Earmuffs are devices worn over the ears to provide hearing protection by reducing noise levels, while earplugs are inserted in the ear canal to protect the ear from loud noise, water intrusion, foreign bodies, dust, or excessive wind. Ear muffs can be used at industrial and manufacturing sites, mines, music concerts, war (defense sector) and others.

Sound intensity measuring greater than 30 db and up to 60 db does not cause hearing damage in an individual. However, exposure to noise levels above 70 db for long term may result in hearing loss and noise above 120 db can cause immediate harm to ears. According to an article published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine in May 2020, around 325,900 people who perform maintenance tasks including snow plowing, and road paving are exposed to hazardous noise levels in the U.S.

The U.S. hearing protection devices market is estimated to be valued at US$ 409.7 million in 2020 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 9.8% during the forecast period (2020–2027).

Increasing incidence of noise-induced hearing loss is expected to drive demand for hearing protection devices.

Hearing impairment is not a life-threatening health concern however hearing loss has major impact on individuals' quality of life. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), in 2016, around one in eight people in the U.S. (13%) aged 12 years or older suffered from hearing loss in both ears. In the U.S., around 12% of the total population suffered from hearing impairment caused due to loud noise. Therefore, the increasing prevalence of hearing loss is driving demand for hearing protection devices to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. This in turn, is expected to drive the global hearing protection devices market growth.

Global Hearing Protection Devices Market - Restraints

Factors such as lack of awareness about hearing protection devices, and improper maintenance of the device before and after use which can cause discomfort and itching to the wearer, which may expected to hamper the growth of the market. Also hearing protection devices such as electronic hearing protection devices may cause heating (device get warm) or pain in the ear canal after prolonged use, which is expected to restrain the global hearing protection devices market growth.
