More about semantic similarity
Today there are many lexical tools for establishing linguistic relationships between words, and therefore calculating the degree of semantic similarity between these words in automatic way. Most of these tools can be considered as a kind of dictionary or even ontology, both general and domain-specific. Among the most popular electronic dictionaries are the general-purpose meta-thesaurus WordNet and the UMLS lexical toolkit in the medical domain.
Maybe the most popular dictionary in this context is WordNet whic is an electronic meta-thesaurus widely used in many applications in various areas, such as information retrieval and natural language processing. It relies on psycho-linguistic theories to define the meaning of words and models not only associations of meanings with words, but also of meanings with meanings. It is one the richest sources of information for calculating semantic similarity, at least, following the traditional way.
