Introduction to Different Ultrasound Probes
Ⅰ. What are the types of probes
It may be difficult to know which probe is appropriate for you when choosing an ultrasound system. To help you find the right probe, we will introduce different ultrasound probes.
The linear probe has a flat array and appearance. It is used to scan small and superficial structures, such as thyroid on the neck. The images linear probes produce are more square or rectangular.
The intrapleural probe has a long handle, a U-shaped lens and array. It is used to scan inside the body. The depth range of this probe is limited to its shape, but it has a larger field of view than the convex probe.
The phased array / heart probe has a small handle, a square lens and array. Usually, it is used to scan the heart through pocket ultrasound machines. This probe has a deeper scan range and the ultrasound of this probe can reach the heart to produce images.
4) Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) Probe
The transesophagel echocardiography (TEE) probe produces heart images through inserting into patients' esophaguses and stomachs. The probe is controlled by its handle and can move in four directions.
The 3D probe performs the same function as the 2D probe with the exception of the moving array. The array inside the probe sweeps and captures image slices from different sides. The captured slices are then put together to produce either a 3D static image or a 4D real-time image.
The convex probe (or curved linear probe) has a curved array, and provides a larger field of view. The convex probe is mainly used for abdominal scanning due to its larger and deeper field of view.
