Character Breakdowns of The Legendary Movie Akira!
Katsuhiro Otomo's remarkable adaptation of his manga series, Akira, stole the spotlight of all other movies with its remarkable release. The 2000 pages comic was intelligently squeezed into a two-hour show that everyone praised Otomo whole-heartedly. Not just the amazing storyline and incredible costumes like a vibrant red Akira Jacket, the characters were also portrayed. If someone hasn't read the comic book, he can easily understand them.
From Kaneda to Colonel Shikishima, every character was strongly built and possessed critical screen times. Although some details were left uncovered by Otomo in the movie, the storyline was so easy to comprehend despite that. Let's know the characters deeply from the manga and the film, as don't miss any aspect.
Shotaro Kaneda:
Kaneda is the main protagonist of the show and the front-runner of a leading biker gang residing in Neo-Tokyo, The Capsules. The boy spent his childhood in an orphanage. The 18-year-old handsome boy was arrogant since he was a kid. Despite having a cocky exterior, he is kind-hearted from the inside. A careless boy who loves riding bikes and getting high on drugs was always on the police's clock.
As the movie opens, he was arrested by the Colonel of the city, Col. Shikishima, during a fight with another biker gang. He met Kei there. When he learned about Tetsuo's transformation into a mutant and destroying the city involving the killing of his friend, Yamagata, got filled with rage. He is the person who loves his friends more than anything. He planned to terminate Tetsuo as the vengeance for the death of Yamagata and also because he was blaming himself for the evil transformation of Tetsuo.
Tetsuo Shima:
Tetsuo is a 17-year-old boy who spent his childhood being miserable and bossed around by the people. Due to his thinking of being incapable, he became fearless that nothing could stop him from being the most influential person. He is the primary antagonist of the movie and a member of Capsules. During the fight with a rival gang, he got arrested with Kaneda but taken by the state for experimentation. As the movie closes, he loses control of his developed psychic powers and quickly grew into a destructive mutant.
Akira:
Akira is a mysterious 10-year-old kid who looks naive but is wise beyond his age. He is portrayed as a main but hidden antagonist of the movie, frozen underground by the government. He was hired by the army for a secret political research project, and due to this, he developed troublesome psychic powers. He became friends with other kids during the project known as Espers children in the movie. The trauma of one of his friends, Takashi, made Akira explode another psychic explosion that destroys Neo-Tokyo as the opening scene of the film.
Kei:
Kei is a beautiful young girl who was on the front-line in saving her city. Being a part of an anti-government organization, she was working to pull apart the people in charge. While on the journey with Kaneda, she got to know through Lady Miyako that she is a channel for the Esper's communication. She started to develop the psychic powers of her own as the movie came towards the end.
Colonel Shikishima:
Despite being an honorable and determined military guy, Colonel Shikishima was a part of controversial government projects regarding psychics research. One thing that he always wanted was to defend Neo-Tokyo from another destruction that Akira caused. People often call him 'Skinhead' due to this quirky haircut. In the mission of protecting his city, he even launched a movement against the corrupt bureaucrats in charge. So, no one can judge him as a dishonest man as the small has to go with the system to stay in it.
Doctor Onishi:
Doctor Onishi, the head researcher, headed the confidential government program that researches psychics. He is a scientific advisor of Colonel Shikishima as well. When Tetsuo started to develop mutant powers as a result of one of the experiments, many advised him to get rid of Tetsuo to save the city. But he used Tetsuo to know the real story behind Akira and his powers, and as a result, when Akira awakens, he got smashed in his car.
Akira portrayed a world that we are currently living in, in the early '80s, and it's just surprising to see the same incidents happening. Akira has already depicted every situation from people going against the corrupt rulers all over the world to people being used by governments for their cause.
