What sources of electricity power the world?

In 2022, 29165,2 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity were produced worldwide, which is 2.3%.

According to the Statistical Review of World Energy in 2022, coal is the leader in electricity production, accounting for 35.4% of global electricity production, followed by natural gas with 22.7% and hydropower with 14.9%.

Burning coal to generate electricity is the world's largest source of CO2 emissions.

In 2022, renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy accounted for 14.4% of total electricity production with an extraordinary annual growth rate of 14.7%, driven by significant growth in solar and wind energy.

With the transition of hydroelectric power to the category of renewable energy sources, they accounted for more than 29.3% of all electricity produced in 2022, with an annual growth rate of 7.4%.

Another important event in the 2022 report was nuclear energy. France's Nuclear Shutdown due to corrosion detected in the safety injection system of four reactors led to a decrease in global use by 4%.

But when obtaining mechanical energy, everything becomes more complicated: coal became the source of the first industrial revolution, but at the same time heated the planet; nuclear fission reliably generates electricity without emissions, but also creates radioactive waste.

To replace hydrocarbon energy sources in the electric power industry, bold and innovative technical solutions and technological processes are needed that can create the scale of the use of wind power plants in order to reduce the harmful effects on the environment, nature and climate. It is worth diversifying the designs of wind power stations, creating conditions for their global construction and application, which will obviously cause a positive effect in the economy, social sphere, and increase environmental safety. In particular, the W.E.T.E.R project, aimed at developing a vertical-axial wind farm, has the prospect of implementation for the development of the energy industry and overcoming the challenges of modernity.
