The Amalienborg Palace

On this walk you will traverse Amalienborg Palace Square where four breathtaking palace buildings used by the royal family as residence for part of each year are situated. Along your journey, you will gain insight into its creation and how well it functions as an exclusive royal residence.

Inside the Bedroom lies an exquisite Rococo masterpiece. Wall carvings painted silver over straw-coloured background create a visual feast, while exquisite blue stuccowork on the ceiling executed by court woodcarver Johann Joachim Dietrich form an animated weave which stands as a masterpiece in Baroque style.

The Great Hall is a splendid setting for banquets and gala dinners. Bjorn Norgaard's vibrant tapestries decorate its walls, and Venetian glass chandeliers add sparkling touches from above. When Queen Elizabeth hosts her Lancers Quadrille performances here, it becomes an ocean of colour & people. Additionally, many royal state visits take place here too!

The Tivoli Gardens

At first we approached the park from Nyhavn's charming canal harbour framed by 17th-century multicolored houses - it's like walking down an endless postcard page of Copenhagen! Even during rainstorms this charming locale makes an enjoyable strolling destination.

We found two old-fashioned covered markets, with one offering an inviting display of artisanal smoked fish - known as skreie - which we sampled. Additionally, we explored Christianshavn - the old town with elegant canalside houses - as well as Christiania, an unconventional hippie enclave in between these areas.

After dinner we attended a concert at Tivoli Gardens featuring Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes performing on an 1867 Bluthner piano with period instrument band Concerto Copenhagen, in the city where Edvard Grieg's piano concerto premiered. While entertaining and lively, Concerto Copenhagen frequently crossed over into "tangy" period instrument tone or simply being out of tune, with their oboes and violas often being the culprits.
