Dry film thickness standard
The main standards for dry film thickness measurement are:
IS02808 Paints and varnishes-Determination of paint film thickness
ISO19840 Paints and varnishes Corrosion protection of protective coating systems for steel structures Metrics and acceptance criteria for thickness of thousands of films on rough surfaces
SSPC PA2 Dry Film Thickness Measurement with Magnetic Thickness Gauge
US SSPC PA2 has very clear principles and procedures for measuring the thickness of paint films.
Perform 5 arbitrary tests per 100ft2 (10m2) (average of 3 readings for each group). Note: Individual readings are not specified, but are included in the average value of "any point" test
The average value of 5 groups of arbitrary tests (ie the average value of 15 test points) shall not be higher or lower than the specified thickness.
The thickness of a single test point shall not be less than 8o% of the specified thickness, nor shall it be higher than 120% of the specified thickness.
Generally, the thickness of dry film needs to be measured by coating thickness tester, which is an instrument for measuring the thickness of dry film on metal or non-metal substrates. After the thickness is obtained, it can be compared with the standard thickness generally recognized by the measured object.
Some coating thickness testers only display the measured value. Other models can store hundreds of data, which can be sent to a computer for analysis. Dry film thickness is important in the coatings industry because it is a determinant of coating product quality, reliability, and life.
