The roster with the names of 287 credible Shree Vaishnava-PanchaRatra Granthas and how to spot fake, anti-Vaidika and anti-Vaishnava Samhitas/Tantras/Agamas…

The below article had also been published in my blogs on Blogspot and Wordpress. If you have a penchant for reading via these blogs (in my opinion, these 2 platforms have better reading design than Teletype), here are 2 links:

Note for a reader: The initial idea of this article was just to publish the unified roster with the names of 287 trustworthy Granthas of Shree Vaishnava-PanchaRatra. However, the roster of this kind will be understandable only by Indian Sri Vaishnavas, leaving a Western/European reader in a quite puzzled and perplexed frame of mind. For this reason, I have written the below set of brief explanations for the Western/European audience.

If you belong to Sri Vaishnavas with the perfect knowledge of Shree Vaishnava-PanchaRatra and need only the roster with the names of 287 Vaishnava Samhitas without any explanations, then just scroll several paragraphs further and you will see the roster, based on the following pattern:

Introduction and the idea of 8 anti-fake lists from 8 Vaishnava-Samhitas.

A couple of weeks ago I have uploaded the brilliant research about Shree Vaishnava-PanchaRatra by H. Daniel Smith to my blog [see this pdf-scan — #»A Descriptive bibliography of the printed texts of The Pancaratragama» — Vol.01 — H.Daniel Smith — Oriental Institute Baroda — 1975].

This research contains 8 separate lists-appendices with the names of trustworthy Vaishnava-Samhitas/Vaishnava-Tantras. Upon seeing these 8 lists, I got interested in building up the unified roster, based on all 8 units, so I have created the one via Libre Calc back in late December 2019.

I was particularly interested in the precise number of Samhitas/Tantras, included in all the 8 lists and the exact quantity I’ve got after the build-up of the aforementioned unified roster was 287 Samhitas/Tantras.

You can find the entire roster below, but I definitely should explain the concept behind it beforehand.

The idea is the following: Kali-Yuga is notorious due to fake gurus, fake tantras and religious duping. «Shree NaraSimha-Purana» (54.27) warns us, that: असूयानिरताः सर्वे उपहासं प्रकुर्वते न व्रतानि चरिष्यन्ति ब्राह्मणा वेदनिन्दकाः || ५४.२७ ||«In Kali-Yuga various veda-nindaka (veda-slanderers) will counterfeit Vedic texts under the garb of enlightened brahmins».

Shree Vaishnava-PanchaRatra belongs to Ekayana-Shakha of Yajur-Veda, so this prediction warns us, that in Kali-Yuga Vaishnava Samhitas and Vaishnava Tantras will be counterfeited by asuras.

If you have ever stumbled upon some wacky Samhitas/Tantras from Assamese/Bengalese regions (written by rajasika-tamasika tantriks and pseudo-vaishnavas), you might have noticed, that these texts sometimes try to pose as Vaishnava texts without actually being the Vaishnava ones due to hefty contamination by various bizzare ideas about the supremacy of shaivas, krishnaites, Kali upasakas and similar tamasika poppycock.

So, the following question arises: «How to spot a fake Samhita/Tantra? How to understand that a certain Samhita/Tantra is fake and does not conform to genuine Vaishnavism?».

The above-mentioned system of 8 lists is one of the answers, but not the only one, because some other yardsticks exist — I will dwell on them further, but first of all I will stop at the idea of 8 anti-fake lists, which is quite plain: we have 8 trustworthy Vaishnava Samhitas and each of these Samhitas has a separate list with the names of other credible Vaishnava-Samhitas.

Please see the illustration-explanation below (or on #plurk, #box, #dropbox):

Thus, we have 8 lists, hidden in eight separate Vaishnava Samhitas: the system of this kind provides the enhanced protection against duping.

However, another question may arise: «Can we rely just on these 8 lists in exposing various tamasika swindlers and impostors of Kali-Yuga?». The answer is «NO», because much more primary and much more important yardsticks exist, so I will delineate them in brief.

01. Vaishnava-Sampradaya and Guru-Parampara.

In Shree Ramanuja-Sampradaya we follow to the «PanchaRatra-Ratna-Traya» notion. It means, that we consider 3 following Vaishnava Samhitas to be primary and pivotal: «Shree Sattvata-Samhita» + «Shree Paushkara-Samhita» + «Shree Jayakhya-Samhita».

However, the most important and the most pivotal Pancharatra text for Shree Ramanuja-Sampradaya is «Shree Lakshmi-Tantra», because Shreemati MahaLakshmi-Devi is The Founder of our Sampradaya.

So, on the level 1 we have 4 most trustworthy Tantras/Samhitas.

02. PanchaRatra paddhatis compiled by main Acharyas.

Shree RamanujAcharya had written «Nitya-Grantham», while Shree MadhwAcharya had compiled such PanchaRatrika paddhatis as «Shree Tantra-Sara-Sangraha», «Shree Sadachara-Smriti» and «Shree Krishna-Amrita-Maharnava».

The paddhatis of this kind set the ideal modes for worshipping Bhagavan Shree Vishnu and Shreemati Lakshmi-Devi and keep us from deviating into various rajasika/tamasika pseudo-siddhantas.

Thus, level 2 — various PanchaRatra-based paddhatis (compilations) .

03. PanchaRatra references and allusions in the Granthas of primary Vaishnava-Acharyas.

When a certain Vaishnava-Acharya mentions a certain Vaishnava-Samhita (or Tantra) in his crucial texts, it also means, that we can consider such a Samhita/Tantra to be authoritative and credible.

For example, Shree Vedanta Desika often quotes «Shree Lakshmi-Tantra» in «Shree Rahasya-Traya-Sara», while Shree MadhwAcharya quotes «Shree Narayana-Samhita» in his glosses to «Shree Vedanta-Sutra» (see the quote below or on #plurk, #box, #dropbox):

Hence, level 03 — references and allusions in the texts of Vaishnava-Acharyas.

04. Ekayana-Shakha of Yajur-Veda.

The entire Shree Vaishnava-PanchaRatra origins from Ekayana-Shakha of Yajur-Veda and such Vedic roots imply, that the overall narrative of any trustworthy Vaishnava Samhita cannot deviate from Vedic concepts, devoted to Bhagavan Shree Narayana and Shreemati Lakshmi-Devi.

For example, «Shree Lakshmi-Tantra» is based on «Shree Suktam» from Rig-Veda, while «Shree Brihad-Brahma-Samhita» is famous due to its connection with «Shree Purusha-Suktam» and «Shree Suktam».

The gist is that a genuine Vaishnava Samhita or Tantra always lauds only Bhagavan Shree Narayana and Shree Lakshmi-Devi following to the famous maxim from «Shree Vamana-Purana», 27.29: विष्णुं नमामि प्रभुमीश्वरम् गीयते सर्ववेदेषु वेदविद्भर्विदां गतिः — viShNuM namAmi prabhumIshvaram gIyate sarvavedeShu vedavidbharvidAM gatiH — «All Vedas are lauding only Lord Shree Vishnu and Shreemati Lakshmi-Devi».

And, vice versa, various fake, anti-Vedic Samhitas/Tantras usually babble too much about Avataras of Lord Shree Vishnu (Rama, Krishna, NaraSimha and etc.) and contain rubbish ideas about Avataras being the source of all other Vishnu-Avataras/Vyuhas (for example, Krishna or Rama being the source of all Vishnu-Avataras).

Usually, Avatara-Samhitas or Avatara-Tantras of this tamasika kind are created by various pseudo-vaishnava sects, typical for Kali-Yuga and don’t deserve even a scintilla of our trust.

05. Reliable English translations.

This point will come in handy for Western/European readers with a lack of Sanskrit knowledge. The recommendation is simple here — just read 2-3 exemplary English translations of primary Vaishnava-Pancharatras and you will never be duped by false texts, because after the reading you will perfectly grasp the style and the vibe of the genuine Vaishnava-PanchaRatra.

I can recommend 3 following reliable editions from my E-Library:

06. And back to the lists/rosters we have started with.

Below is the unified roster, it should be read like this: postfix «-S» means «Samhita» and «postfix absence or zero postfix» also means «Samhita», while postfix «-T» or «Tantra» means «Tantra». Let me illustrate with the excerpt, which should be read in the following way:

99. «SHREE MAHALAKSHMI-SAMHITA» is mentioned in the lists of credible Samhitas from «Shree Purushottama-Samhita», «Shree Vishvamitra-Samhita», «Shree Kapinjala-Samhita» and «Shree Bharadvadja-Samhita».
