The future is already here with Masa 2.0

Masa was founded with a mission to bring capital to the world. Founded by immigrants and built by a global decentralized team, we strongly believe that economic opportunity should not be limited to where you were born or live.

In our original 1.0 product, Masa was building a truly decentralized credit bureau. Consolidate over 10,000 web3 and web2 data sources and provide individuals, businesses and developers with the tools to access credit online. When we were building a fairer global credit bureau, we realized that web3 was missing an even more fundamental primitive: identity. Simply put, there was no standardized web3 identity protocol that made it easy to aggregate, attribute, and authorize (credit) data on-chain.

In May, Vitalik published a paper titled “Decentralized Society: Searching for the Soul of Web3”, which looks at how Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) — public, non-transferable, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) — can serve as a web3 user identity. We decided to implement the SBT infrastructure we built for web3 credit reporting and narrow down the scope to focus on identity management.

On August 10, 2022, Masa Soulbound Identity became the first EVM-based soul identification protocol in web3. The results exceeded all our expectations: within 3 months, over 50,000 Masa Soulbound Identities and over 65,000 .soul names were created on the Goerli Ethereum testnet and the Celo Alfajores testnet. More than 800 developers have expressed interest in creating projects based on Masa Soulbound Identity, showing a strong pull in the bear market. It became clear to us that in order to connect the next billion users, web3 urgently needed a composable, user-friendly, and privacy-preserving way to manage online identities.

We are paving the way for the first standardized individual identity protocol in web3. Soulbound tokens bridge the gap between user actions, personal information, authentication, and permitted exchange. We use SBT to represent user attributes in web3 and in the real world, complemented by a protocol-level abstraction that provides full SBT control, attribution, and resolution. With Masa, the metadata associated with a soul-bound token is encrypted and can only be accessed with the permission of the identity owner via the Masa protocol.

Masa Soulbound Identity aims to be the digital passport of the web3 user — for DeFi, decentralized applications, communities, games, and more. In a decentralized society, your name .soul (e.g. masa.soul; 🌽.soul) will be your alias, a unique name that represents your soul-bound identity Masa — the domain for your web3 identity. You can use your Masa Soulbound Identity to apply for DeFi credit, build in-game reputation, vote in the DAO as an authenticated user (anti-Sibyl and vote weighting), join an NFT whitelist as an authenticated user, and more. .

With Masa 2.0, we are the first to build bridges to help people around the world access the new web3 economy through Soulbound Identity. By enabling users and developers to use Soulbound Identity around the world, we are starting to lay the bricks for the future of a decentralized society.

Welcome to Masa 2.0.

To find out more, here are 8 things you should know about Masa’s identity.

What is a Soul Binding token? What is Soul Identity?SBTs are meant to be the intersection of our unique identity, technology, and how we interact in a decentralized society. These are publicly visible, non-transferable, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can serve as a web3 user identity, inextricably linked to their owners.

What are the main use cases for Masa Soulbound Identity? You can now use your name .soul to unlock a wide range of web3 use cases:

  • DeFi loans
  • Web3 KYC and identity verification
  • GameFi Apps
  • Single sign-on Soulbound Token
  • Soul Airdrops — Souldrops
  • Registration to the NFT whitelist in one click
  • Identity Card for DAO Governance Vote
  • Masa Green (Proof of Uniqueness to Prevent Sibyl Attacks)
  • Convenient domain name for your website
    …and more

What is a Name.soul SBT ?Web3 wallets have become a tool for unlocking DeFi, but it’s missing the Identity part. Lack of identification runs the risk of not being able to authenticate users. Masa Soulbound Identity fixes this by bridging the gap between your wallet address and your own identity, while protecting privacy and giving you autonomy and control. Your name.soul is a unique domain name for your digital identity. Think ENS, but for your digital identity in web3.

What key Masa products have been launched to date?Ethereum Goerli Testnet (Oct 2022): Users can mint the Masa Soulbound Identity, claim a .soul name and mint a web3 credit score on the Goerli Ethereum testnet, and trade .soulname on OpenSea. Read blog post

Masa Devnet (Oct 2022): Individual developers and projects can seamlessly integrate SBT and identity management into web3 decentralized applications using the Masa SDK. Individual front end developers can interact with the Masa protocol through the standard Masa React SDK UI implementation. Developers can access our v1 command line interface and developer documentation. Read the announcement on the Devnet Blog.

SBT Single Sign-On (September 2022): Users can seamlessly register or sign in to web3 applications, protecting privacy and making it as easy as signing a transaction in their wallet. Dapps can authenticate against associated SBTs stored in the user’s wallet. Read blog post.

Celo Alfajores testnet (August 2022): Users can create a Masa Soulbound Identity, require a .soul name, and mint a web3 credit score on the Celo Alfajores testnet. Read the announcement on the blog, read the information about the launch.

How can developers and partners work with Masa?
To become the leading web3 identity protocol, Masa aims to be the SBT framework supporting identity for the next generation of web3 projects.

In October 2022, we launched the first Web3 program for SBT developers, called Masa Devnet . Starting November 2022, we will be integrating and announcing our partnerships with a wide range of web3 projects, serving use cases across DeFi, GameFi, DAO, NFT, and more. Apply to join the Masa Devnet waitlist.

On Masa Devnet, developers and projects can seamlessly integrate SBT and identity management into web3 dapps via the Masa SDK. The following are the main types of SBTs we can support as of November 1, 2022:

Masa’s Soul Name NFT (MSN)
A human readable address — a domain name — that resolves to a person’s soul — think ENS for SBT. .soul names are a combination of letters, numbers and/or emoji that can be used to create a soul name (eg vitalik.soul). Soul Names can be bought in the Masa protocol and traded on OpenSea. Masa is currently only running on the Goerli testnet and will soon launch on the Ethereum mainnet.

Masa Identification SBT (MID)
The soul of the user’s identity in web3. All attributes of a Soulbound User Identity are bound and resolved through the SBT of the User Identity Masa.

Masa Web3 SBT Credit Rating (MCR)
Web3’s own credit rating, calculated based on web3 user activity on the Ethereum blockchain.

Masa Green (MG-X)
For example, a token representing a human verified challenge; Masa Green — Phone verifies that the owner of the MG-P SBT is a unique user who has completed 2FA authentication with a unique phone number.

Factory Masa SBT (MSF)
SBT smart contract factory that allows developers to deploy their own SBT smart contract using the Masa SBT standard. Deployed smart contracts can be linked to the user’s main MID and can be fully controlled using the Masa protocol.

What’s next for Masu?
As the premier identification protocol, Masa’s success is determined by the polar star of SBT mints and API calls. We want to become the standard of identity for web3. Expect to see more Masa Soulbound Identity users; more use cases in DeFi, GameFi, DAO/community and user authentication; more developers and projects in the coming months.

Who is behind Masha?
Led by co-founders Brendan Playford and Calanthia Mei, Masa is built by a decentralized core team around the world and is supported by approximately 75,000 community members from 40 countries. Masa is frequently mentioned in mainstream media, at events, and in industry white papers. Watch us on CNBC, Coindesk IDEAS, Hackernoon, New York Stock Exchange, TechCrunch, Financial Inclusion Week, LA Blockchain Summit, Ethereum World News, PYMNTS, Forbes, Business Insider, FinTech Times and many more.
