Volkswagen Group will retain Lamborghini and Ducati
The Volkswagen Group has many well-known brands, including Lamborghini, Ducati and Bugatti. For some time, Volkswagen (VW Malaysia) is considering divestiture of some of these brands, but at least two are not going to happen. Italian motorcycle maker Ducati and Italian supercar maker Lamborghini have been confirmed to stay at Volkswagen.
The future of Bugatti is not known. The Volkswagen Group also confirmed that Bentley would be placed under Audi's control. Bentley and Audi will share electric vehicle technology in the future. Like most major car makers, Audi has a big stake in electrification in the future.
Electrification will go into performance cars and luxury cars. Bentley is one of the biggest brands of Ultra Luxury cars, and its buyers will love electrification. Details of VW's plan came in a statement Monday from the car manufacturer's supervisory board. Although the plan comes from Herbert Diess, Volkswagen's chief executive, he needs the support of his supervisory board to implement it.
Board members voted unanimously in support of day's strategy, according to the report. According to reports, the board particularly supported the company's move towards electrification and digitization. Other details of the meeting also included the chief financial officer candidate, Diess, who was approved by the supervisory board.
VW has promised to cut administrative costs by 5% and procurement costs by 7% over the next two years. As for Bugatti's potential fate, past reports have shown that VW is in talks with electric car maker Rimac over the acquisition. As for Audi electrification technology, it may eventually cooperate with Bentley. It is reported that Artemis technology project, which is currently developing the follow-up products of A8, may also bring Bentley an all electric vehicle.
Volkswagen announced that the supervisory board of the Volkswagen Group has approved its together 2025 + strategy, which will readjust the brand's priorities and resources in electrification, and most importantly, to keep a few luxury brands within the original scope. After months of speculation, they may sell or spin off, announcing confirmation that Lamborghini, Bentley and Ducati will stay at VW.
As part of the plan, Bentley will be controlled by Audi from March 1, 2021. According to the announcement, this is to enable Bentley and Audi to more closely coordinate the brand's electrification plans. However, it is worth noting that Lamborghini and Ducati are already under the control of Audi, so the move also integrates most of the non-Porsche luxury brands of the Volkswagen Group into one department.
However, the announcement did not mention Bugatti's future. A representative of Bugatti declined to comment on the matter, noting that they did not participate in or comment on rumors or speculation about the brand or its products. There's been a strange connection with Stephen Blandy, the current chief executive, who has been named chief executive officer. Earlier this year, however, it was reported that remake, the maker of electric supercars, was interested in buying Bugatti.
But don't expect Rambo or Bugatti to lead the electrified journey. As Motor1 points out, Winkelmann just said last week that the two high-performance brands will "focus on internal combustion engines" for as long as possible.
With this adjustment, Volkswagen hopes to reduce its fixed costs by 5% by 2023 and reduce its material costs by 7% over the next two years.
