Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an artist, sculptor, architect, writer, anatomist, geologist, astronomer, botanist, inventor, engineer and scientist – the embodiment of Renaissance man.
Among his most famous works were The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and The Vitruvian Man.
We have prepared some interesting facts for you.
™️His name was not "Leonardo da Vinci". Leonardo's full name at birth was Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci, which means "Leonardo, (son of) Ser Piero of Vinci".
👨👩👦He was born out of wedlock
Leonardo was the illegitimate son of Messer Piero Fruosino da Vinci, a wealthy and influential local lawyer, and a peasant Katerina. He was born in the Tuscan town of Vinci, and his rural upbringing shaped his worldview.
🎒He has not received a formal education. Leonardo was mostly self-taught and received no formal education other than basic reading, writing and mathematics. At the age of 14, he began studying with the famous sculptor and artist Andrea del Verrocchio from Florence.
🎨In Verrocchio's workshop, he received theoretical training and a wide range of technical skills, including metalwork, carpentry, drawing, painting and sculpture.
🎵He was an experienced musician.
He played the lyre and flute, often speaking at meetings of the nobility and in the homes of his patrons.
His surviving manuscripts contain some of his original musical compositions, and he invented the organ instrument, the alto harpsichord, which appeared only in 2013.
🦥He was a chronic procrastinator
Leonardo was not a prolific artist. Due to the abundance of diverse interests, he often failed to complete his paintings and projects.
Instead, he spent his time immersed in nature, conducting scientific experiments, dissecting human and animal bodies, and filling his notebooks with inventions, observations, and theories.
💁♂️ His ideas did not have much influence at that time.
Although he was highly respected as an artist, Leonardo's scientific ideas and inventions were not popular among his contemporaries.
👁️He was fascinated by the human body
Leonardo's thirst for knowledge spread to the human body. Not content with studying what already existed, he deepened his knowledge by conducting up to 30 autopsies of a person in hospitals in Milan, Florence and Rome.
⚔️His greatest work was destroyed by the war
In 1482 Leonardo left Florence for Milan, apparently lured there by an order for a huge equestrian statue in honor of Francesco Sforza. When completed, it would have been larger than the other two Renaissance equestrian statues (over 16 feet tall). Leonardo has been working on this work for 17 years. This sculpture was destroyed by French troops.
