The Best Western Fashion in Springfield, Illinois
Established in 1989 with the slogan “The Midwest's Best of the West” Horse Creek Outfitters has been a staple in the Springfield community.
Located inside a World War II Quonset hut at 600 S. Dirksen Parkway is a business that belies its exterior.
Thanks to the ingenuity of Mandy McCormick-Tomlinson, folks who love Western wear and the modern bling that goes with it can shop at Horse Creek Outfitters.
Since 2002, McCormick-Tomlinson and her staff have done their best to assure that customers find what they need and a few more things to pick up for fun. Horse Creek offers a plethora of attractive and functional boots, cowboy hats, silver belt buckles, bling-embellished belts and jeans, bolo ties, silver and turquoise jewelry and more.
“Boots, boots and boots have always been our best-sellers,” McCormick-Tomlinson says. “We keep over 2,500 pair in stock year round. Sizes range from toddler size 4 to men’s 16.”
Yes, boots are big business, even in Springfield, and they come in various leather patterns and shades, including brown, black, red, yellow, pink and even floral designs. Parents of pint-sized rodeo lovers shop in the children’s section where itty-bitty boots are lined up — including some that feature a color very popular with little boys, John Deere green.
“We stock a huge selection of denim from ladies’ embellished Miss Me’s and Rock and Roll Cowgirl to basic men’s Wranglers,” she says. “We also keep a nice selection of shirts and belts for the entire family. We sell a lot of home decor, purses and jewelry which includes Brighton, Montana Silversmiths and fun fashion stuff, too. In January, I usually go to a (merchandise) show in Denver, and that’s where I pick up the turquoise.”
McCormick-Tomlinson has a theory about Western wear. There are people who participate in rodeos and horse shows who will always be looking for the right attire, but music plays a part in it, too.
